Windows 10 and HFS drives

Any way to get Windows to read HFS/+ drives?

Not that I'm aware of, and if there is a way, it's probably really sketchy.  Best bet would be Linux, it can read and write basically everything ever.

well, if you copy them to a filesystem Windows can read, then yes  

 

I don't understand why Microsoft hasn't added additional filesystem support to Windows over the years... I mean, the fact that Linux can understand NTFS, which is proprietary, while Windows has no clue about any common Linux file system, despite them all being totally open source is really pathetic.  I don't know if it's a business decision, or a technical limitation or what but it's annoying.

Linux like you say can read most anything

macOS can at least read NTFS and older Windows File System standards

 

Windows on the other hand only understands itself.

Yeah. Saved a bunch of people headaches. There's also MacDrive, but it's too in your face for me.

Paragon installs and just simply makes HFS+ show up... doesn't do anything more (which is good).

MacDrive has utilities if you need to repair and whatnot, but it also has a tray thing and has stuff that runs in the background.

Another thing I don't understand though is how/why MacOS lags so far behind Linux in NTFS support.  Like, massively behind

Linux often proves that most moves Microsoft or Apple make are simply arbitrary or self-serving.

Reading the NTFS drive at least covers probably the majority of most users needs.

 

Also Apple is switching to APFS in High Sierra so they might do something from there.

All I know is we got write support to NTFS in like 2008 iirc and read support I don't even remember how many years prior to that.

 

And to tie back into the topic, for that reason, it should be easy enough to use Linux to move files between the systems if need be, but it looks like you've been suggested a few other options to so I'll bow out now

Linux is a sort of social statment. Its great in theory but without any center unifying force or real infrastructure behind it, it will always remain a social statement as far as the consumer market is concerned.

I suppose MacOS, and to a much greater extent, iOS and Android were the "unifying force" you were looking for.  It's all in the family

They are very unifying. 

 

Android has Google backing it and all its services and iOS and macOS have Apple backing them with all their services as well. 

 

Linux is just linux, distros updated and maintained by a small teams probably out of hobby with only them behind them.

Yeah that's the idea, and the appeal for those interested.  While there may be value in "unifying" and centralizing something, there's also incredible value in having something decentralized and owned and controlled entirely by the users

I'm always on the fence as to whether or not I want it to explode. I think it sits nicely where it is. If you want to put money behind it a la Red Hat, you can. Then you get all the support you need since it's monetarily motivated. The open source/community appraoch is pure(ish) passion.
