Hello,

I am thinking about making my PC smaller. My current build is:

MB: Asus H170-Pro Gaming

CPU: i5-6500

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S

RAM: 2x4 Corsair LPX @2133Mhz

Sound Card: Asus Xonar D2X

HDD: WD Blue 1TB

SSD: Samsung 250GB 850 EVO

PSU: Evga Supernova G2 750W

Case: FD Define R4 (window)

I know the PSU is a big overkill. I wanted it to be as quiet as possible. I had a MSI GamingX 1060, but i don't play games anymore, so i sold it. Perhaps in future i will buy something like 1050/1050Ti but that's it.

Nowdays when i look at the PC case it is so empty ... i don't like the thought about wasted potential :D So i am thinking about going ITX route. Never done that before ... I want it to be easier for carying around.

It is mostly used for multimedia and a few professional programs like Photoshop, but nothing serious. Games i play(if any) are mostly old-school, so VGA is no problem at all at this point.

Do you think it is worth it going for AMD? Or keep my CPU and change only the PSU and Motherboard? I don't want to touch it for a long time. Only CPU change if that gets too weak.

Do you guys have any advise? About motherboard and such? It will be nice to have Wi-Fi and maybe USB Type C. Not sure really ...

The cheapest way is to get an ITX mobo for your 6500, and a case that fits everything in (might need a new CPU cooler or PSU)

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

Model: HP Omen 17 17-an110ca CPU: i7-8750H (0.125V core & cache, 50mV SA undervolt) GPU: GTX 1060 6GB Mobile (+80/+450, 1650MHz~1750MHz 0.78V~0.85V) RAM: 8+8GB DDR4-2400 18-17-17-39 2T Storage: HP EX920 1TB PCIe x4 M.2 SSD + Crucial MX500 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD, 128GB Toshiba PCIe x2 M.2 SSD (KBG30ZMV128G) gone cooking externally, 1TB Seagate 7200RPM 2.5" HDD (ST1000LM049-2GH172) left outside Monitor: 1080p 126Hz IPS G-sync

Desktop benching:

Cinebench R15 Single thread:168 Multi-thread: 833

SuperPi (v1.5 from Techpowerup, PI value output) 16K: 0.100s 1M: 8.255s 32M: 7m 45.93s

Mini ITX build using one of Ryzens 6-core processors will help you with professional work. Get either a used gpu or a 1050ti. Will help with render times, as well as work well when you do decide to game. Plus the Ryzen processors doesn't currently have on-board graphics so it would be needed.

Otherwise keep what you have and buy a mini itx case and mother board for what you have and just make sure the case can fit your drives and has decent airflow.

It depends on how small you want to go. A lot of Mini-ITX cases can still pass as a microATX one. A sub 15L case like mine though would require a new PSU (SFX) and CPU cooler (yours is too tall) and you'll be limited to 95W TDP CPUs without overclocking. However you'll also have to make sure the I/O panel has as much of what you need as possible, otherwise you'll have to pick and choose which expansion card you want to keep.

At this point I'm going to pull out the "Wait for Coffeelake" card (it supposedly comes out in October), look at the landscape from there, and build something new.

If i go for FD Define Mini S? Then i will keep my cooler perhaps? And change the PSU with EVGA Supernova G3 550W? It's too much, but i want something with decent quality ... The electrical grid here is not so great so i need all the protection i can get. Was thinking about Seasonic M12II because of the ribbon cables, but it will be a downgrade i think. I want something that is not group regulated ... Also, i am not making any 3D work, so rendering is not an issue for now.

Hmmm ... Coffeelake is not a bad idea also.

Edit: Can you recommend a good PSU with ribbon cables? And  good itx case? Define Nano S is good enough? And a motherboard if i decide to keep my CPU? Something with a good layout for that case?
