Crazy GPU set up

So I have a laptop with an APU, ew.

And I'd like to play some games on it; however, that's not gonna happen. The cheapest thing i've seen to resolve this problem is getting a pcie to usb and having an external card.

How would that bottle neck the performance of it?

Would it be worth buying a higher end card or just something around 50 dollars?

The odd apparatus for the gpu looks like it'll cost around 20-50 bucks.

the link bandwidth is terrible, even in combination of low end cards, you'll end up paying the price of a simple desktop once you've pieced all the things together, and you still remain limited to the relatively poor cpu performance of your laptop.

It's a quad core with 3 ghz so I think it'll run fine, just the bottle neck of pcie to usb sounds so bad.

I do plan to build a new desktop soon so I was thinking of getting a high end card and using it with my laptop until I finish the build.

USB will bottleneck any GPU, like all of them. its fine for a basic display adapter but not for anything that can play games. piceing out parts off the used market for a desktop is a much better spending of your money

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

In reality i'd only be spending whatever the cost of the janky rigging for pcie to usb because i'd turn around and put the gpu in my desktop.

So do you think it would work well enough to be worth it? I'd be using it for 2-4 months until I get everything done.

no. it will be shit. USB 3.0 isnt even going to cut it, and bandwith isnt usiually the only problem, you have to deal with the latency added on from not haveing a direct PCIe link. unless you can pull out your wifi card and get one of those adapter jobs i dont think you will have any gain, maybe even a decrease in fps. your CPU will probably bottleneck most things also

probably something somewhat relative to add:

at work we have a few "official" HP usb to DVI thingies to add a third displays to desktops that normally dont support it, we *ONLY* use them on our own/admin systems because we dont want to deal with a HP adapter not working on a HP desktop, because both we and HP know that they'll act up at some point in time anyways.
