CPU that goes well with a H170 Mobo

Hey guys,

What do you think is a good CPU to go with an H170 Mainboard? I was thinking about an 6600k, but I would loose the Overclocking Capability (or dont? a college said he could overclock with it a little, dunno why). Price budget would be around 200€. I would use it mainly for gaming

Don't buy a H170 motherboard

if you already have, a 6700 (6600 isn't worth it at all)

I would buy it from a college with 8GB of RAM and a Cooler for 50€.. Even with an H170 Chipset it is a pretty good deal

H170 cant overclock PERIOD.

The little bit is too minor to even make a difference to waste the money on. If you get a h170 get the best CPU that fits your budget that isn't a K series

i5 6500/6600 non K. Or a used i7 6700.

If you're considering the 6600K, make sure to factor in the price of the cooler, which will likely run you up about €20-30 more if you get a cheap cooler (that isn't garbage). While the CPU will work fine, you don't get to overclock it and they cost more, plus you pay extra for the cooler, so you often get a bad value proposition. You're most likely better off with a 6600 or even a 6500. However, this isn't always the case. Sometimes you can get a K-sku CPU and cooler at a better value, so it ultimately depends on how much the CPU (and cooler if you're paying extra for that) costs.

If you haven't bought an H170 board yet, I wouldn't buy one, personally. Kaby Lake boards (B250, H270, etc.) typically cost around the same amount or only slightly more and but they open you to more options. I'd also consider going B350 board and buying a Ryzen 5 processor (1400 has the Wraith Stealth cooler, 1500X and 1600 have Wraith Spire, don't bother with 1600X), but price and availability can vary based on where you live.

Flash your BIOS to support Kaby Lake CPU's, then buy a 7700K.  Though the H170 won't overclock CPU's, the 7700K has a much higher stock frequency than the regular 7700, (4.4Ghz vs 4.0Ghz all-core turbo).  At a 4.4Ghz all-core turbo boost, you will only be 400-600Mhz slower than most overclocked 7700K CPU's.
