Help me choose a 2 or 3tb HDD

Light-Yagami

Hi guys..

I've got a 150eur budget to buy as much QUALITY internal storage for my desktop.

I've been looking at the Seagate BarraCuda 3tb 7200rpm HDD and the 2tb WD black..

It has to be a high performance drive, sth where I can put my movies, games and school stuff and trust it for the next 4-5 years.

If you can recommend me your drive of choice, I'd be really happy. 4tb is also an option, but it has to be below that 150eur mark. I mean.. 150 is really the top of what I can give.

Thanks for your advice

If you want it too last that long i would go with anything WD. I have a caviar blue in my PC now and it has lasted 6.5 years power on time. One of my friends has a 2 year old Seagate 1 or 2 tb that has failed after 1.2 years power on time.

Specs:

 Gaming PC: i5 3570, 16GB 1600MHz, GTX 780 3GB, Transcend 128GB, WD 500GB, Seagate 500GB, Thermaltake 600W Smart, S340 w/ RGB, Windows 10 Pro

 Server: Xeon E5 2650, 12GB 1600MHz ECC, 8400GS, WD 2TB + 1TB + 1TB, EVGA 500B 500W, Windows 10 Pro

 Laptop: Macbook Pro Retina 2013, i7 4558U, 8GB 1600MHz, Intel Iris Pro 1.5GB, Apple 256GB NVME, Mojave

 Internet: $70/month For 500/100, Actually get 525/102

Truly, a WD black would be the best choice for safety, but a blue will work too, also if you want to keep some money get barracuda, its cheaper, and unless brakes straight away (and you can just quickly refund that if it happens), it will serve you for a good time.

I'd recommend a WD Black or Hitachi Deskstar. Great controllers and warranty on the Black.

To get back to the topic - WD is the way to go..

I'm looking from this angle right. barracuda 3tb drive is like.. 102eur. but the 2tb WD black is 140eur. Is that beacuse the WD is that much better?

Or why is there such a price difference?

Controller logic and other componentry. Either drive would be a good choice as they offer multiple 1TB platters with 2 heads each and I believe both have piezoelectric motors for finer movement of the heads making them more accurate and less likely to write on the wrong track.

If the Seagate comes with the PE motor, go for it.

Where do I check for this stuff.. There isn't any "comes with the PE motor" in the description..

I'd really love to have 3tb, but I have to know that it will work like a charm for at least 5 years.. It's mostly for offloading tho.. Not as a main drive or anything

Snip

Most HDD's die within the first year. If it survives that, it'll likely survive past the warranty period.

To find out if a drive has a piezoelectric motor, you'll need to check reviews or find someone who has broken one open to check the internals and knows what to look for. You can also contact Seagate and ask their CS. You can also look into the WD Gold drive, it's a "datacenter" drive with a long warranty, but it can be heard through a Fractal R5 non-windowed case making it a bit loud with an obnoxious hum.
