Hi,

I'm looking to build my first PC and wanted to get some advice. So far i have two lists of parts that i'd like your opinion on but i haven't put any fans or cooling systems in as i didn't know what to get.  The lists are fairly similar, i've mainly just upgraded the memory and SSD drive in the second and as the first list better suits my budget i'd really like to know how you think it will perform and if you think it would be worth it to upgrade to the second list.

I'll mostly be using the system to watch T.V and DVD's, play games (i'm looking to replace my xBox with the computer), edit photos and video clips as well simple word processing tasks and i'd like the system to be fairly quiet.

I haven't built a pc before so if you know of any sites or threads i should look at, please let me know. I'd also like to know what anti-virus i should get for when the PC is up and running.

Thank you very much for your help, i really appreciate it.

In my opinion, if you're playing games you should go with Windows 7 just because of driver support which Windows 8 still lacks. Also, you should get a good cpu cooler so that you can overclock your i5 and get more performance out of it :)

So the differences are more expensive RAM, more expensive SSD and different optical drive for some reason... well depends if you want to waste extra money or not.

Go with the first build, and use the difference to pay for better cooling. Also, dunno why you think you need 850W. Get a better 600W PSU.

I'd grab this power supply for a single card overclocked to high hell:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256086

or the 750W model for two cards:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256079

Both feature fully modular cables which will be excellent to sleeve to make you build look a lot nicer.

Other good options:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817580009

And AVG free seems to work fine.

Another thing: unless you specifically like the gold look of the Asus Z87 boards, there are a lot of other choices, black and red/orange/green/yellow - you decide. Any Z87 board from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte or AsRock will do the job.

list 2 seems like a better one to go for, BUT OH MY GOD DONT GET A SOUND CARD. if you want to enhance your audio, get an external Fiio Olympus E10 DAC.

The lists aren't that different at all.

Best anti-virus is common sense. In other words, you don't need one. Just don't click on links to sexy singles in your area waiting to meet you.

Thanks for the input guys. I've narrowed down my list of componants but are still having some trouble deciding between certain parts. Please let me know what you think.

Also, I currently have a BenQ GL2450Hm monitor but am considering getting a BenQ XL2420TE 144hz monitor or a Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitor. Has anyone had any experience with these monitors? And what are your opinions of them?

Thank you.
