6800k for gaming?

I need a new PC, and I'm looking at Coffee Lake. However, right now, for the same price as a 7700k I can get a 6800k which is a 6 core 12 thread CPU. How would this be for gaming compared to a Ryzen 1700 or Covfefe Lake?

I would think pretty similar though with the 8700 and 8700K coming so soon I would wait and decide between those and an R5 if you are looking for a six core.

well it depends on what mobo do you have ,if u want to upgrade then go for ryzen its more efficient faster more cores and threads for less price than 7700k

I'd wait for coffee lake looking at your profile you own a 3570K and 780Ti i would wait that way you can be on a new platform who knows maybe once coffee lake comes out Intel might keep the socket around for icelake

From a gaming stand point if the game only uses 4 cores or less a 4.5-4.7ghz sandy bridge CPU will be about even to a 3.9ghz ryzen

The value proposition depends on how much you'll pay for the motherboard, but the 6800k should theoretically come pretty close to the 8700k.  A little less IPC can be made up for in the overclocking potential with a higher wattage chip.  I'd say it's a better option than x299 for sure.

If you can wait that would be better, but if you need a 6 core intel chip now then you should be happy with that.

Personally I might wait until the 8700k but the 6800k (which I have) is more than capable in any game. I have mine at a modest 4Ghz and have never seen usage go above 50% (which was in BF1 at ~120fps).

 

The 8700k will give you some new tech and a much better IPC along with (hopefully) higher clocks and better OC-ability (Broadwell-e is not a great OCer).

I moved from a 6700k to a 6800k i run mine at 4.2ghz at around 1.3v. From what I can gather Broadwell-E is not the best OC'er people tend too get better overclocks on Haswell-E 5820k. I got my 6800k system quite cheap. If i were you and if you can hang fire I would see what 8700k has to offer. All i will say is x99 boards are going quite cheap for good 1s now due to x299 being out.
