So I have a really good chat about tech today at work with a guy who has never built his own pc before but is not all into gaming besides on the traditional games consoles.

So he tends to run virtual machines and at least 2 on a given machine and does do a lot of heavy database work as well. He codes a lot in golang as well. Now my question is what kind of pc build would a guy like this need when there is no sense of gaming involved at all. I'm a little intrigued from a non gaming perspective. I did suggest be quiet as the case of course and silence was a factor in his thought process.

Any recommendations for other parts?

Check my Sig.  my Server build or something similar would be a great starting point.  as nerdslayer said Threadripper may be better than Ryzen7 for VMs.  Mine is used for a Plex server hit by up to  4 users at once all streaming and potentially needed lossless BluRay rips trans-coded on the fly.  which is very CPU intensive

Also...probably more than 8GB of RAM... shoot for a min of 32.

Yea... Threadripper with 64GB of RAM is perfectly doable... and probably more than enough for his needs.  Like a 1920X.

Ok so you would suggest building a rig and a server do you then?

I was suggesting the parts i used in my server would be a modest starting point.... to give a frame of references for the type of setup a computer NOT orients in any way for gaming might look like.

that GPU cost me $40 new... and i dont even use it... its for the 1% of the time i need to hook it up to a display for some reason.
