Don't buy parts 1 at a time. Save your money and buy them all at the same time or else you will get a few parts that are outdated by the time you get all your parts. Also DOA parts are pretty rare as long as you stick to trusted brands. However, there is a possibility that you get unlucky and get one. Also you shouldn't worry about static electricity in the bag since the anti-static bags should prevent that. Just make sure to ground yourself before handling the components.

If you're buying in a retail store. Let them test it first and if you're not gonna use it after you bought it, just don't take it out of the box. Problem Solve.

Yes, if you ask. If they ask you why do you want to let them test it first. Tell them, "I'm just making sure that their are no defects on the parts that I'm buying". In our country, they test it out first then they'll sell it to you if it's working properly. No questions asked.

I swear I wrote something here about how no one goes online and talks about their part not being DOA...... Are posts vanishing? Edit: Ohhh.. Whats up with the double thread? :P

You're not alone. Mine just vanished a while ago and now it's back and I'm also sure that there's been a lot of people that have already commented in this thread including yours. :P

In my personal experience, I would have to say , YES it is very rare to get anything DOA. I have been building PC's since 2001 and I spend $2000 or more a year on PC hardware, In the 12 years that I have been doing this I have only had to RMA one thing, back in 2006 I bought a HIS HD 3850 and it was over heating, when I got my second RMA card back it worked 100% just fine. In my opinion 99% of the time, The user has no idea what went wrong or has very little custom PC building experience when they were building there PC so they guess then turn around and say it was something that was faulty, In tense, why we have a Billion bad reviews online today. You do not have to buy all your parts all at the same time, just make sure you know what you are doing when building a custom PC and everything will work out the way you want it to. Always always do your research and never believe all the reviews you read on the web, take pros and cons and make the choice that is right for you.

Hm? But it doesn't cost any more to wait. Its not like you can use the parts anyway until you get all of them.

It is very rare to get DOA but it can happen. I would suggest you to get all your parts in one time so you are able to test all the parts immediately to see if they are functional and to RMA parts that are DOA.
