High Ping @ Random Times Through Router

Hey guys, I am using the Asus RT-N66u router and my 180mb dl and 25mb up connection grinds to a halt and ping is anywhere from 65-80ms to the Miami Server (I live 30 mins driving from there) in the early am EST typically.  This ONLY happens when I am running through the router.  If I connect directly from my ARRIS Surfboard SB6141 I am getting a normal ping and speeds from my speed tests.  I have QoS settings disabled.  Firewall Settings on.  Not really sure what to do.  The router is quite old, could it just be failing?

Here are my speed tests, with both the comcast site where I get a bad connection, and the normal speedtest site where I get a good one????

If it were me, I would look in to updating the firmware if they still support it. If not, maybe DDWRT. But yeah, its an old wireless N router. So it could be failing.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Should have mentioned firmware is up to date.

If it happens over a wired connection to the router, then I would say the router is going bad. You can try DDWRT if you want as it might fix the problems, or buy a new router to see. I dont know if this has anything to do with the fact your modem is on the edge of what Comcast will allow. As in even though that modem can do 383Mbps down, Comcast will only provision it to 200Mbps. Im thinking its the router, especially if a direct connection to the modem is fine.

Router wise, I know the TP Link Archer C7 isnt bad, but it lacks features. Ive heard ASUS is also a good choice. Many people here would suggest Ubiquti or build a PFsense box. Its up to you on how much money you want to throw at the problem.
