Long distance Cat 5 cabling.

Good Morning afternoon and evening ladies and gentlemen.

For my workplace, a small church with a priest who thinks that what is old is golden has decided to finally ditch a 56K line in order to adopt a CAT 5 line for a new office about 250 feet away from the bridge to where the line will end.

I have already thrown the line and connected it to a router located next to the bridge. The line has about a 2 100 foot drops and at the other end it reaches a wireless router (Netgear N300).

At this wireless router when I plug in the line in from the internet the internet logo blinks orange. At the router located next to the bridge, the LAN port where the line is exiting is blinking 5 times a green light then 1 orange light (and repeats).

If anyone has any tips into what exactly could be going on please do so.

Hey,

The max range of a cat5 Ethernet cable is 100 metres. You will need to put something like a bridge or a repeater, to boost and re-transmit the signal for the final distance to the router.

Thanks for the tip, now the problem is that the cable is ran outside, exposed to the elements. What should I do here?
