It'll depend on electricity cost

which I don't believe is cheap in NY, but it's still likely to rake a profit.

this can give you an approximation

i havent seen numbers on how much better the 290x is in mining so really dony know. its very possible that the best mining will come from a 7970 in terms of its being a high end GPU with good price/performance.

your current build is pretty good. mining is basically all GPU and u picked the red team which is better than nvidia in terms of mining

the 7970 in my rig has an estimated profit of 13 dollars a day with the factoring in of the power. If your power is not to expensive why not. I am a new to this though.

Do I need to know the watts of the whole PC or the watts of the card itself? I assume the whole PC.

You mostly want the tdp of the card because you will be leaving that running a lot more.

well u are using the entire pc (in a way) if ur mining and thats it itll be fairly accurate to use just the GPU wattage at 100% load

I am just guessing on the power til my father can look at one of the bill and see how much it really cost. I hope I went on the higher end of what the cost would really be.

Turns out the cost for power here is around .11 so I will be making around 5k a year. What is the catch? Is this just like free cash over time or?

Well, you have the noise and heat to deal with in exchange. But it seems very profitable imo.

No catch, you are using your computer to help secure and run the network. Earning a reward in the form of the Crypto-Currency is the incentive to keep the network running.

You really can't estimate out past a week or two. The price of the coins change constantly, and the difficulty to create the coins increases/decreases as more/less people start mining. I'd also point out you're likely only pulling 250 - 300 Watts. not 600.

To answer your original question, people have been able to push a 290X to 900 K/hash. Still the best Dollar per Hash is the 7970. The 7970 also run with a low intensity allowing you to use your computer while mining, other GPU's make the computer unusable while mining.

You can also throw any number of different GPU's into your single computer, using pci extenders/converters you can plug them into any pci slot available as they don't require high bandwidth. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-e-1x-to-16x-Powered-Extenders-Lot-of-6-/261339807459?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd910fee3

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.

Nope, you're getting caught up by downloading the entire blockchain one block at a time. It starts at the first block and slowly works it's way to the present.

Download speed is not the bottleneck when syncing. The Litecoin blockchain is only a few GB's the problem is that you need to download and verify the blocks sequentially which takes time. There are upcoming changes which will allow faster syncing by only getting block headers and downloading the full blocks in the background later, but until then syncing is slow.

Right now it downloads 1 block. Checks and verify it's correct and matches the consensus of the network. Then proceeds to download the next blocks. Repeat this about 470000 times until it's fully synced.

There is an option to bootstrap where you download a majority of the blockchain from an archived format and it can cut the total syncing time down a fair bit. https://litecoin.info/Bootstrap.dat

It's easier to just let it finish syncing.

You're trying to mine with GPU settings on a CPU, change the drop down box on the left side to the GPU, not the CPU.

Also, I see you're blocking out your password, make sure you are not using a "real" password. It should be kept as an x or something non meaningful or unique. The worker name and password get sent as plain text. It's not a big issue, but if someone is packet sniffing they will get the your password.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
