So im going to buy an AsRock AB350 Pro 4 in the next couple days for a budget htpc/gaming pc and i planned on using Team Elite TED48G2400C1601 which is a single 8gb stick @ 2400 because its the cheapest i can get and allows for me to add another 8gb stick later down the line when DDR4 isn't so expensive. however i just found out that AM4 being so new doesn't have alot of compatible ram types and this ram kind isn't in the compatible list. the closest i could find on the list was: TED48G2400C16B which i cant even find, all i find is laptop ram and this isn't a laptop motherboard so it makes no sense.
any ideas?

Here's the QVL for that board

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/AB350 Pro4/#Memory

Anything on there will work with your board.

that's the list i'm looking at now. but it still doesn't explain why the closest compatible ram to the one i'm looking at is apparently laptop ram. what i mean is if you look up the supported TED48G2400C16B Laptop ram is all that comes up. and that is the closest model number to the one im looking at which is TED84g2400C1601

These are the only sticks I can find on PC Part picker

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/memory/#m=341&s=402400&Z=8192001

This was the closest to the model number I could find on there and it doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9238TW/team-memory-ted48gm2400c1601

Hold it I think I might have found it...does seem tricky to find and I don't know much about Team as a brand to be honest.

yeah

so if i search the compatible ram on my local store (CPL) it takes me to the page of the ram i was going to buy anyway http://cplonline.com.au/team-elite-ted48g2400c1601-8gb-ddr4-2400mhz-desktop-memory.html

so i can only assume its the same ram.

Most likely as long as it has the same model number.

It doesnt though thats the thing.

However doesnt matter since i finally found some compatible ram that isnt stupidly priced from an unexpecting company: Patriot PSD48G2133K which is a 2x4GB so less upgrade room but who tf actually needs 32gb of ram in a gaming pc.

Pretty much all brands up to 2666 mhz are supported

Its when going over that speed the  "problems" start ... and even that has been mostly fixed

So would the speed difference make up the cost/risk buying: 1x ct8g4dfd824a stick @2400 that isnt listed as supported over the cheaper 2x4gb PSD48G2133K. That is supported.

The fact that a certain RAM module isn't listed in the QVL of a motherboard doesn't mean that it's absolutely not compatible, it just means that it hasn't been tried yet. So it's likely but not guaranteed that it will work, but if you wanna be 100% sure just buy one that's listed in there.

Alright cool. Thats what i was thinking. It still allows for upgrade to 16gb which is plenty.

If its not on QVL doesn't mean its unsupported, Ryzen will lose much of its power by using 2400 ram. I use completely "unsupported" kit and run 2933 with my custom timings with no problems. Get at least 3000MHz.

Golden rule for Ryzen, 2 sticks, dual channel, single rank, speed over 2666. 4 sticks will be worse, dual rank will be worse, slow memory will slow down your chip

well then im just going to swap to lga 1151 because the price difference to get ram that fast makes it the sameprice as an 1151 combo.

most ram that is 3000MHz+ is likely going to be samsung B-die. which will work whether its on the qvl or not.

Yeah problem is litterally any 3000mhz ram here in Aus is horrendously overpriced. im not going to bother with ryzen unless i can use  Patriot PSD48G2133K  because its actually a decent fkn price.

makes sense.  i managed to get a really good deal on 16GB of 3200MHz ram for only $100

Yeh they are all expensive because of the timings or higher mhz or both.
I got the  Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3200C16W running now at 3200 works like a charm though.
