No boot... blinking cursor

If clearing CMOS didn't work, unplug or turn off the PSU and remove the battery from the motherboard for about 10 to 15 minutes.  I've had boards that have problems with completely clearing CMOS with the jumper and this fixed it every time.

Now 2:30am. Couldn't sleep (might have overdosed on coffee at work) so just put battery back in. No change.

Pulled out a 1060 from another system, connected monitor to that... I have bios! Take out GPU, connect back to onboard, just that flickering cursor again. So, for whatever reason, onboard graphics isn't working. I'm now also reminded how much I don't like the Gigabyte bios, so I'm not going to rebuild and install right now, but at least it is working.

This one has me stumped.

Mobo: Gigabyte Z97-D3H

CPU: i5-4570S

Cooler: Hyper 212

PSU: tried two different ones, ATX24 and EPS both connected

Ram: tried two sets (Corsair 2400, Kingston 1866)

Tried running in and out of case

SSD: Intel 40GB (also tried disconnected, no difference)

Video by onboard HDMI connection

As far as I know, all components were working fine. The mobo has been idle for a while as I took it out for sale, but I found a use for it and decided to rebuild. On first attempts nothing happened at all. I did a clear CMOS which got me to the blinking cursor. That's when I tried swapping stuff around, and now it is pretty bare, with only mobo, CPU, ram outside of case. I still only get a blinking cursor. I've waited a bit but no luck.

I was going to try a GPU in it, but the only one I have in reach is a 750Ti with DVI only. The monitor I have only has HDMI and DP. I don't have adapters. I could move it to another later on.

Oh, I even connected the speaker. There is a single beep before I get the blinking cursor so that seems normal.

Any ideas? I'm gonna call it a night for now.

I suspect that you didn't completely clear the CMOS.

If clearing CMOS didn't work, unplug or turn off the PSU and remove the battery from the motherboard for about 10 to 15 minutes.  I've had boards that have problems with completely clearing CMOS with the jumper and this fixed it every time.

I didn't write it, but I also tried removing the battery for a short time, using the clear jumper while battery was out. I'll try taking it out overnight. If that isn't long enough, nothing is. Battery voltage measured out of mobo was over 3V so normal.

I also tried a few more things. Unconnected keyboard and mouse, no difference. Took out CPU, socket pins look good. Nothing unusual on bottom of CPU. Put different cooler on (as less fiddly than the 212), no difference.

That sucks man.  I've never had onboard video fail on me.

I too am not a fan of Gigabyte BIOS.  It's the reason why I returned my x299/7900k setup in favor of waiting for the Asus x299 Extreme or Apex.

Do you think a BIOS reflash/update might be worth a shot in attempts to fix the onboard video?

I might check for any bios updates, but it isn't important to get onboard working. The 1060 can stay in there, as I got a 1080 Ti today, and will shuffle the old 980 Ti into other systems and backfill that way.

Great congrats on the 1080 Ti man!

Too late, already ordered mine. It's all in the hands of fate now, lol.

Debating if you should get one also? Wonder why I waited so long... straight replacement for a 980Ti, gives me a nice boost for my 144 Hz 1440p monitor in gaming on max settings. The most difficult part was setting the RGB lighting to match the rest of my system! I need to reroute the power cables later as the LED logo on the backplate is partially obscured #firstworldproblems

My problem is, I broke my own rule. I promised myself I wouldn't waste money on hardware I didn't need. I had a 1070, and I was perfectly happy with it. Sold it for a decent price, and have used my iGPU since as punishment for choosing want over need. Now that I found the GPU I wanted, at the price I wanted, I ordered it.

Got the ASrock Z270 Taichi for $83 (after $30 rebate) and the EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid for $770 after a ton of promo codes and cashback deals. As far as I am concerned, my ATX build is officially done for the next few years, lol.

As a follow up on this, I put the Hyper 212 back on, put it all in the case, and swapped the 1060 with a 970. The 1060 was returned to where I got it from, and the 970 is now spare as I will put my loose 980 Ti in its place. All is working fine. I did note the bios was set to display on PCIe gfx first, but I don't know if it set this for me, of if perhaps it was set previously and couldn't be wiped.

Looking for bios updates, there are two version later than the one currently on the mobo, both listed as adding/improving Broadwell CPU support. Doesn't seem worth the effort of putting them on.
