Yeha that makes sense, so really If i wanted to run 3.8ghz at a lower voltage i'd need to go for the 1700x maybe?

yeah probably your best bet. you can get used 1700x and 1800x for not much more than 1700 now. i know cex in the uk are selling 1700x for £255

Rig Specs:

AMD Threadripper 5990WX@4.8Ghz

Asus Zenith III Extreme

Asrock OC Formula 7970XTX Quadfire

G.Skill Ripheartout X OC 7000Mhz C28 DDR5 4X16GB

Hmm intresting i'll look into that, thanks. Also do you think the Noctua NH-U14S would be a good cooler for overlocking on Ryzen?

I used the Corsair h100i, the Alpenföhn Atlas and a custom loop.

With all three i was able to get 4GHz

i need abaout 1.45V to get it 24h-prime95 stable but 1.375-1.4 is enought for overall stability

on my chip the voltage did not increase the heat output by much but the clock itself did.

for example 3.7 GHz on stock voltage was already at 85-90°C under (prime95)load (stock cooler)

Yeah i had simular results with he stock cooler at 3.7 and 3.8 is just impossiblke for me. I'm thinking of getting the Noctua NH-U14S

as a cooler though, do you think that would be good enough for the 1700 and the 1700x if i decided to replace my currrent 1700. Thanks.

yeah that is a great air cooler. its quite expensive though for the £/performance.

Yeah i've been trying to decide between the NH-D15S and the NH-U14S but the NH-D15S seems a bit big and difficult to work with. I'm not sure what the performance difference is like on an overclock though. I guess the NH-U41S would be good enough.
