My 1080ti doesn't run at it's advertised speeds.

dewuevnoc

Card is a Gigabyte Aorus Extreme.

This card is not stable at it's highest 'OC' Mode settings of 1746mhz core .

There's a thread on the gigabyte sub reddit right now with a couple of people suggesting that their utility (aorus graphics engine) is the culprit for not having an aggressive enough fan profile.

I suspect for me at least it may be a badly binned chip or insufficient vcore; the card doesn't even touch 50C before it crashes within 30 seconds and, it boosts between 1984/2043 when it's actually working.

Even if I don't use gigabyte's software and, forcing 100% fan speed, 120% power with the same clocks on MSI afterburner, it just instantly crashes.

When it's clocked down to it's 'gaming' mode speeds ie; 1721mhz core it runs just fine.

It seems that the extra 25mhz core is causing the instability. It can run the ram at the 11448mhz (although my firestrike scores actually end up going down when doing so)

This lends me to believe that there's insufficient vCore which is interesting because this particular card's vCore VRM setup isn't the greatest among other 1080ti's ; it has a very low switching frequency (150khz) and, is using quadrupler's to run it's 12 phase VRM. Buildzoid did a fairly through PCB review wherein he is iffy on it's effectiveness in maintaining droop because of this arrangement if you're interested.

I've posted letting the Gigabyte employee know on their subreddit and also sent an RMA request to gigabyte just to let them know, once they reply I'll go into more detail now that I have a more clear understanding of why it's crashing.

At this point though, I'm not sure if I'm willing to keep a $770 that can't even maintain it's advertised speeds.

Yeah best option is to probably RMA it.

The Aorus Extreme 1080 Ti has so many cases of stability issues, its a meme at this point.

Really? I can't say I thoroughly researched this too well but, I do know that 1080ti's are not great overclocker's to begin with and Boost 3.0 kind of puts them near their limit anyway. I'm kind of debating whether it's worth it to play the silicon lottery again with a 1440p 144hz monitor.

edit after google; wow.. you weren't joking

The RMA is really just to let gigabyte know about this nonsense. If I do anything with it it'll be to return it; I'm well within amazon's return period.

what is your PSU, not just the wattage but the model, it really sounds like it's running out of power.

Did you monitor all stuff on your graphics card? What is the Vcore, GPU load, memory load etc? If so, what are the results? Maybe we can get a conclusion out of that data.

It's a corsair hx1000. I'm running a 1700x at 3.6ghz on a gigabyte x370 gaming 5 motherboard. The psu fan doesn't even kick on so it's under 40% loaded.

Obviously gigabyte just got too generous with its factory overclock , 1746 is pretty aggressive at its price point.

it sucks that it's It technically not stable at its factory clocks but, I'll put in some more resarch here before making the return call.  It's gaming mode is stable and, it's one of the quietest 1080tis on the market. If it's factory boost clocks are pretty close to the limit for other AIBs anyway does it really matter?

I haven't logged that to know but when I get back home I'll do more testing.

The strix is $30 more but the ftw3 and SC are the same or cheaper.

hardocp only managed 176x core(with more vcore and 120% power) and 11400mhz on their strix. Bjorn3d didn't a review of a FTW3 and they did a little better on core but 200mhz worse on ram.

I'd say best bet is to return it for another or get a refund and buy a FTW3 or Strix.

Have you tried different drivers and a clean install of Windows? If you're having stability issues it's best to try and remove as many factors from the issue as you can. What happens when it 'isn't stable'? Just the standard black screen, tab out and a message that the Nvidia driver recovered? The Aorus software is total shit so (if you end up keeping the card) just use it to set your LED settings then uninstall it, the card seems to have a BIOS or memory somehow to remember what LED settings it's got, so the Aorus software is totally useless.

You've got nothing to lose by RMAing it though if it's giving you issues, other than wasted time of course. The super high base clock speeds on the Aorus Extreme might be to blame, since to my knowledge Pascal cards aren't binned (if they are, we'll never know as ASIC scores are hidden), so it's possible your card is set to boost so high that's its not stable. Even a 26Mhz overclock on my Aorus isn't stable, they are just set to boost really stupidly high out of the box. But yeah, like you've seen, a lot of people are having issues with these.

So, I'll be keeping the card.

Ultimately I contacted amazon customer service which is AMAZING about stuff like this and they made me an offer to keep the card which I couldn't refuse.

Additionally, based on a couple of reviews of other 1080ti's;  the stable speeds with my card are essentially where most 1080ti's start to become unstable anyway. I'll continue to be in touch with Gigabyte if nothing else to reinforce that I've had a problem so that they can possibly fix it later with a Bios Update or for future reference but I'm satisfied at this point. There are certainly cards out there with much better vCore VRMS but at the end of the day it means diddly when we're literally talking < 50mhz difference between cards here.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
