Hey guys,
my girlfriends house has been having internet issues since they are trying to cut out cable. Their house really isn't that big but it is old. They have what I believe is the newest Comcast router. The router is in my girlfriends room and is apparently still giving issues with being able to stream in there. She'll be able to watch stuff on hulu for a little while but then it just gets pretty glitchy and just stops working out. Sometimes it even starts when she first starts watching stuff. I was wondering if you guys think we should just replace the router or if you think it could be another issue. I just can't see how there would still be problems with the router next to her tv

But it's not just her tv, it's also the one in their living room

Have her install a wifi anaylzer app on her phone, there are several free ones, and check the signal in various locations.

Sometimes electrical interference from any device can cause a router performance to tank. It may also tank if anything is stacked above or below it since heat does need to dissipate. I usually don't trust the routers any (read: all) ISP(s) gives me because they're usually refurbished. Even if they come brand new in a box with wrap all over it, doesn't mean the quality of the device is especially good since every network has a different setup and ISP's can't test, or usually don't test this. What I'd suggest is doing what @Lurick suggested.

See which channel the router is on, and which routers in the area are on the same channel. Once you've figured that out, the router should have a settings menu that will allow you to change the channel. Make sure it's a channel that has the least amount of routers / wireless signals on that. Usually 7 or 8 works, since most routers use 1,6, or 11. If this doesn't work, the best thing to do is set the ISP router to bridge mode and get a separate router from a reputable brand like Netgear, TP-Link, etc etc. Usually these routers are tested much more in several different case scenarios and perform much better.

Thank you! Will definitely run some testing. I think I have the router set to 11 when I originally set it up.

Comcast uses the shittiest equipment. There is a chance the router is bad. I can say that generally their supplied routers have shit WiFi performance. Let me put it to you like this, we had 6 of their cable boxes die with in a year. If you want good performance I highly suggest if she is not subbed to their phone service that she look in to purchasing her own modem and a decent router.

Another issue could be depending on the time of the day, a congested node. If its a node, it will affect all devices on the network. It could also be a signal issue as well. If her signals are marginal they could be pushing out of the designed limits and causing issues. For instance if one of the downstream or upstream channels was out of spec, you would run slower depending on what kind of modem and service you get.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
