It's impossible to know how long a build will "last", I recommend to avoid buying stuff you don't need in the hope that it will "last" you longer because by the time you actually use it it may have been better to just upgrade anyway.

If you want a build suggestion give us your budget and tell us what you need it to do.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Build something with Threadripper and 4-way SLI Titan X's (there's a hack to let it work in games) and it should last a massive amount of years at 1080p. It'd also be an overpowered waste of money.

Future proofing is tough to quantify. Chipsets and CPU sockets are updating every couple years on both mainstream and enthusiast platforms. Generational improvements in GPU performance alone can double graphics performance in a couple years. Buying "cheaper" components now and upgrading in less time will net you a better experience over the lifetime of your computer than buying highest end components now and being forced to extract 5 years out of them, by which point there are extremely outdated.

Future proof? It's almost impossible to do that. Technology advances are something you can't predict, and something which is necessary for the future may come out just one day after you build your rig. If you want your stuff to last as long as possible, only way is to buy all the newest and greatest parts now and hope it wouldn't be obsolete anytime soon.

As for my own opinion on building PCs, just select your parts based on whether you would require them or not, not whether it would be future proof.

GPU & HardDrive/SSD are really the only major components apart from cooler I would expect to 'upgrade' every couple of years

I'm running a Sandy Bridge i5 (hope to get Ryzen) and a 980 Ti. Pretty smooth, and I don't really need to upgrade for the games I play. If you always want to run the latest and greatest, you'll need to upgrade every year or two (GPU only is you start with a solid CPU), but if you stick with your faves or lower settings, you can stick with one build for ages.

Until you realize many games don't support any sort of SLI and a threadripper (just like every other cpu on the market) is still slower than a 7700k in most games. realistically you'd want to upgrade to a newer graphics card within 3 years.

That's what future comes, games will utilize more cores and more games will support SLI

People have been saying that for 6 years, I still have to see it happen. If you were to overspend based on this assumption it would be a gamble at best.

And to be clear, it's not impossible that things will "last" you longer than anticipated - you just can't know.

6 years are consoles were potato, how we have proper 8 cores consoles, yes future games will use more cores, even now most AAA games use more than 4 cores.

u cant future proof yr system with hardware ie cpu and gpu as there basicly going to always become old and out dated and not upto the job any more its just how it is so you need to look at say a high wattage psu high end coolers what support for water cooling your case has and things like that

international racing driver

My Build

i5-7600k

hyper x fury 16gb (2133)mhz

asus strix 1070

CM 212x

asus z270-p

corsair 550w psu

agon 1440p 144hz tn monitor

corsair strafe mx silent KB

corsair void rbg (wired)

razer mamba te with firefly mouse pat

Exactly, the best advice most will give you is to buy the best CPU and Motherboard in combination you can per budget, with a decent PSU you're set for a good number of years. I went with the i7 5820k two years ago on an X99-A and even today it's still absolutely fantastic for 3D rendering.
