potato or not they had 8 cores, if those cores were bad it would only mean multicore support was even more important, and yet it didn't translate too well on pc - besides there's probably a limit to how much you can parallelize cpu workloads when it comes to game, most of what can be parallelized well is already done by the gpu.

Get a 1080ti in SLI with a 1080p monitor - bam, future proofed, you will be able to play max details in games for quite a few years :D
