I've been wanting to upgrade my media server and these might just do the trick, considering used or refurbished x99 boards don't seem too expensive either.

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

If you need lots of cores (slow cores) then have at it.

I've seen a lot of cheap 2011-3 E5 Xeon's on eBay as of late. Most of them are ES chips from China but some are being sold from north america as well.

Scam? Or are people dumping these cheap for some reason?

It's not a scam.  Old server procs get recycled en mass and they have to get rid of them.

However there is a big fat catch.  Since a motherboard is FAR more likely to die than a CPU, there are a LOT less motherboards than CPUs.  It's a real challenge to get a 'good' price on a mobo for those cheap Xeons.

I've purchased tons of server equipment from eBay in the past and have had great success.

I wouldn't worry when buying stuff on eBay, they have a money back guarantee policy so the buyer is always covered. This however means that the seller is 99% screwed whenever the buyer were to open a case against them. It always ends in 2 ways. Buyer can either get a full refund. (money back and keep the item) or they can get a refund and they ship the item back to the seller without having to pay return shipping. Sellers cant leave negative feedback against buyers, so they will lose. Sad how eBay works because honest sellers will get screwed over and hosed by scammer buyers.

Slow cores aren't an issue for me, this is a Plex/NAS box. It currently has an A6-3600 so it's a big upgrade even in single core performance.
