GTX 980 or R9 290X

Evolution90

Well i only game at 1080P MLG pro man... so that shit be a bit overkill TBH, which i like :D

R9 290X is about right at 1080P so added performance is icing on the cake really.

I paid 400$ for mine brand-new in the store and sold it for 510$ used for 8 months :P Bought a top-end 980Ti variant with that money and it was worth it ^_^ (Yeah, the prices are high but here in Poland those are actually normal prices)

Mine didn't unlock at all but it got 1160MHz core / 550MHz memory stable which gave me 17300 GPU points in FireStrike ^_^

It's definitely faster than both 980 & 290X and is more futureproof, performing great in DX12 titles (BF1 runs awesome on it) while consuming less power than a 290X and around the 980 level if you undervolt it, yeah, it has 4GB of VRAM but it's HBM and even if you surpass 4GB it doesn't result in performance loss unless you surpass 5GB :)

Yeah that's pretty fast :) mine got 18989 gpu score at 1210/570 but it's not quite stable at that speed.

I gamed at 1200p (which is around 11% more pixels than 1080p) and I could pretty much max out any game :) The VRAM should also suffice for 1080p.

Extra cores. There is 3500 stock. Stage one bios is 3776, stage 2 bios is 3854 and I think last one is fully unlocked to fury x at 4096

In theory, though I've read that later revisions of the Fury Nitro had those cores disabled and hardware-locked so they couldn't be unlocked.

I actually can't wait to go AMD again for a GPU.. 660Ti is long in the tooth.

That 5830 before that.. what a POS.

The drivers are more than fine now if that's what you meant ^_^ They're stable, the updates are frequent and add new features & improve performance and I'd dare to say that they're in better shape now than what Nvidia offers (I think I can say that since I recently switched from an R9 Fury to a GTX 980Ti).

The other great thing about the nitro is that the short pcb allows for a massive cooler so it runs super quiet and if you change the fan curve a bit you can get it to run at 65c or below under full load while still being very quiet.
