Is m.2 better than an ssd?

M.2 is a type of SSD, it uses a direct PCI-E bus 4x slot though, so it's not bottle necked by sata limitations. Realistically if you don't do large transfers from disk to disk you wont notice the difference though. Some M.2's are the same speed as sata ssd's, some are 3-4x faster.

M.2 usually makes your system look nicer, if you care about that. It looks like a small stick, compared to SATA ssds, which look like a box.

It affects loading time but not frames.

Not all M.2 SSD are PCIe based. There are some that are still using the SATA III interface.

M.2 is a type of SSD that goes into an M.2 slot as opposed to SATA. The correct title for a thread like this is "m.2 vs sata" or something like that.

It doesn't affect FPS, quality or anything like that. SSDs only affect the load time of the game. An m.2 is a small amount faster than a standard sata SSD. Most people buy M.2 because it's two less cables you need to worry about.

m.2 PCIe can get much faster speeds than normal sata ssds, but there is no difference between a sata m.2 and sata 2.5. Some things are even worse to get the m.2 as it costs slightly more and has slightly less faster speeds. A good example for how fast m.2 PCIe m.2 drives can get is the 960 series. The 850 series uses SATA so therefore there is no reason to get a m.2 slot over 2.5" slot, unless you count looks and size. m.2 is also very nice as it removes some cables needed and cleans up a build.
