unRAID Alternative

I have an unRAID setup but have been experiencing some problems lately with either hardware or software, it has started to get a bit frustrating. 

 

I want to setup just a file server and offload the hard work to a dedicated workhorse server.

 

Curious if anyone has experience on building SAN or where one could go for a good place to start?

CentOS or FreeNAS.

Stay away from SAN's for home use. Theyre for setting up distributed block addressing. 

 

unRAID is pretty user friendly but if you want a change and already have all the drives, then go for FreeNAS. It's extremely good.

SAN is great for use especially if you can dedicate a switch and NICs to SAN traffic.

Which SAN protocol are you attempting to use?

FC, FCoE, or iSCSI ??

Do you understand the problems you're having running unraid? Unless you know it is an unraid problem not a hardware problem, it may not help to switch to another OS.

What about try xpenology DSM (free clone of Synology).

I think it's the obvious choice now after recent updates.
