External HDD for MBP & VM's

Ok, so recently I bought a Macbook pro 13 inch with the i5 and 16GB RAM. 

I'm currently looking at some external HDD's that I can use to play around with some VM's (homelab etc), the VM will be stored on the external HDD while running.

The LaCie ones give about 125 mbps read/write speed. Will this do the job or do I need one of those super expensive external SSD?

A hard drive will run the VMs just fine, but if you're used to solid state it might be hard to go back. You could always just put them on thumb drives.

Yeah indeed, well I was looking at a local shop where I have some vouchers for. 

I can get a samsung T3 500GB for about € 180 which has USB 3.1 gen 1 OR I can get the WD My passport SSD 512 GB for about € 250 which has USB 3.1 gen 2, so up to 10 gbps. 

 

I got about 170 worth of vouchers so either add 10 for the T3 or add 80 for the WD.
