So, I've got a Seagate 5TB external hard drive that failed, when I removed the hard drive and put it in my windows 10 m computer it shows up but as an unformatted drive.

The data on it is probably not very important but would take a significant amount of time to replace. Does anyone have any advice on how to recover this data without investing in another external hard drive?

Seagate has a recovery tool. You can run it to see if anything is salvageable prior to going to data recovery, since that will be $$$$$. The free version will scan but not allow you to recover. If it gets things, you can pay for a license or go to someone. Buying a license will be a lot cheaper in this case. You'd probably be looking at $400+ USD for most places

If you haven't already, you can check on the health of the drive by using our free diagnostic utility SeaTools.

As was mentioned above, Seagate does offer Recovery Services, and if you do decide to invest in In-Lab Recovery as a last resort (it can be quite expensive), we do offer that as well. There are also 3rd party options available for both, you'd just have to do some research on what other users have had success with.

If you would like to check on any potential warranty information on the drive, you can do this by going to our Warranty Validation tool. If you need to, you can get in touch directly with Seagate Customer Support here.
