1440p or 1080p for gtx 1070?

Ryuhayabusa132
Go to solution Solved by Lare111,

I tried 24" 1440p monitor with my 1070 but went back to 1080p. In some very demanding games like Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Dishonored 2 I had to lower very many settings to get stable 60 FPS but other games were fine. Not sure about future games though...

In my opinion 1440p didn't look good enough to sacrifice the performance. It's so nice to just put everything on ultra on 1080p and get smooth framerates. Also I don't want to upgrade my GPU for a while.

I did a comparison and 1080p monitor with DSR was actually very close to 1440p monitor quality. Also you shouldn't use 1440p monitor at 1080p resolution. It looked awful, much worse than native 1080p monitor.

So I have the option between buying a gtx 1440p 144hz monitor and a 1080p 144hz monitor. I will pair it with my single GTX 1070. I like to max out all games! So what should I expect here? I would rather not sell my gtx 1070 in the next few years. I dont want to upgrade my gtx 1070 this year just to play the new GTA V. So what do you guys think? Is it worth upgrading to a 1440p 144hz or a 1080p 144hz?

Go for the 1440p, you can always run it at 1080p in gaming if you need to, and it'll give you more screen realestate outside of gaming.

Could you elaborate?

You should be able to run games at 1440p easily with a Geforce GTX 1070. Even with demanding games like, ARK: Survival Evolved, I am able to run it at high to ultra settings on 1440p. As said above, you could always downscale if you really need to.

More pixels = more stuff that can fit on the display.

The large majority of games have a resolution setting, they could just drop it down to 1920x1080 from 2560x1440 if it's too much for their card to handle, though it should be fine seeing how my GTX 970 can handle 1440p. (I get 50-60FPS on the newest Hitman game with almost maxed out settings)

Agree that 1080p on a 1440p monitor looks like complete shit. Looks like 720p, or worse... In 1440p its all crisp and no problems, but in 1080p you can see alle the pixels in a weird way. I have a Acer Predator XB271HUA 1440p/144hz

Most games I can play at Ultra and keep 60 ish fps, but too me, 60hz is to slow. So I usually drop settings to medium/high to get more like 80-100fps.

Ghost Recon Willands is very demanding in 1440p, i need to play on high settings to get around 70fps.

I used to dismiss such comments as being extremely elitist and snobby, but I also do feel that 60 fps just does not cut it anymore after switching over to 165hz monitor last year. Its hard to go back to sub 100fps after getting used to 100+fps for too long now.

Yeah, I never really understood the whole 144hz is so smooth thing. But after i got my 144hz 1440p 4(ish) months ago i really understood. And 60fps just feels SO laggy, its weird. Some games with 60fps cap is a little game breaking. Im usually happy with 80fps and up for casual games.

Just FYI, even 1080Ti can't push every game > 120fps maxed out at 1440p.

gtx 1070 is good for 1440p 60fps at most, you need at least gtx 1080 to enjoy 1440p 144hz

CPU: Ryzen 2 2700@ 4.0Ghz    Mobo: Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi    Cooler: EVGA CLC 240    GPU: GTX1080 FTW DT @ 2113Mhz   PSU: EVGA 750W P2

This pretty much sums it up.

This is true, but be aware that running  a 1440p monitor at 1080p will cause the monitor to have to upscale. This often means that colors appear washed out. I have a good quality Dell 27" 1440p monitor, and I avoid running at 1080p at all costs because of this.

Running native resolution is always better.

There's always the option of reducing other video settings as well.

Seeing how my 970 handles 1440p fairly well, a 1070 shouldn't have much issue at all.

Yes I agree, 1070 should be fine for 1440P. I run a 980Ti, which is equivalent, and can run everything at 1440p 60fps on High or ultra settings.
