To upgrade or not to upgrade?

Ok so I run a i5 3350P cpu atm. Plans probobly late next year are to build a new computer but until then try to upgrade old rig some to get better out of it until then. Saw some i7-3770Ks in very good or like new condtion [according to sellers all with above 97% ratings] for under 200 bucks in soem cases. Sicne i already planned to go from a gtx 760 to a 1060 6GB model. I wonderd if it'd be worth it given my plans to buy one of these lightly used CPUs too? Any opinions?

Note I do have a Z77 motherboard.

If you can get one for under $200 definitely go for it.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

@DocSwag I admit to being hesitant on buying used but new is well forget it I coudl buy a new Ryzen 5 and mobo for the same money. But I guess my worry is A: would I have to reisntall windows and B: risk to my motherbhoard even with the Asrock boot protector.

A clean install is always suggested for hard-hardware changes, but not necessary. You might encounter some weird issues.

There's no risk for the motherboard, even if the CPU is hardly failing.

And generally speaking, there's no risk in used parts as long as you buy from a trusted seller with many reviews from different people.

Go for a Ryzen 5, if you're in the same price range.

@ErrantNyles  Plans are for a Ryzen build next year. But also plan to make a fairly beefy build.

@asand1  I guess then it's good I purchased a nice Z77 board. My asrock motherboard so far has shwon no discoloration on the capaciters. No signhs of bulging out hell the dman things are as uniform as the day I unboxed them. Also I even with my hyper 212 evo on there nto see any signs of board bending. So gues my board chocie was good.

Put together a PCP'r for a Ryzen 5, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a mobo for under $200. I dare you.

You did in your first post. If you can get an i7 3770K under $200 then you should do that rather than paying more for a Ryzen 5. 3770K would give you 3 years of good service, and allow you to save up for a real kick ass system down the road.

Did you read at least? No? Ok, go read again.

First, there's a "IF".

Second, there's "price range"

And third, nobody asked for 16GB of RAM.

Less coffee for you man.

@asand1 No I said buyign new for a 3770k was not a good idea. Cause brand new it's too pricy. yes used under 200 made more sense. Anyways seemsl iek a good deal and I'd like to be sure my next build is bad ass. But thanks for all the input everyone.

I read everything. A used 3770K would give him (or her) the best value over a whole new system. 16 GB seems to be the "go to" RAM size anymore.

The whole point of my post is that there is no "if". You cannot build a Ryzen system with more than 4GB under $200.

I am responding to his initial post where he was asking about a used i7 3770K.

well I may pull the trigger in the end here @asand1 likely next week on pay day I'll have enough for the cleanign stuff and the gpu I want atop of the CPU. With that I am just hoping the TX 650 corsair 80+ bronze PSU will hold out for it.

@ErrantNylesWhat price range are you talking about? The only price range I see and responded to was in the initial post. He clearly said he did not want to pay for a new one.

650W will be plenty as long as the quality is decent.

@asand1 it's a Tier 2 Corsair PSU. It's about 4 years old now has a 5 year warrenty. So far it's survived couple of power outages that killed another PC in the house.

@asand1 cool, I generally buy PSU's from either Corsair or EVGA and usually their 80+ bronze stuff which tends to have excellant build quality.

As long as you're looking at the tier list you're good. Be careful buying by name though. There are some low end EVGA and Corsair units that should be avoided.

@asand1 yeah I check where it is on the list first. Especially when I see a super low price. To me doing your research ESPECIALLY on PSU's is never a bad use of ones time.
