USB to SATA Adapter for Internal Use

External hard drive adapters are quite common that allow one to connect an HDD or SSD to an adapter that plugs into USB 3.0 for an easy way to access an otherwise internal drive. However, I'm looking for something quite different. 

 

I'm dealing with a motherboard with only two SATA ports and I'm looking to add an SSD with the HDD and ODD that are already in the computer. I'm also dealing with limited PCI-e slots, so PCI-e based SATA cards are a no-go. However, what I've thought of is, if it exists, is an adapter somewhat like I described previously, except with a USB 3.0 header adapter and molex or SATA for supplementary power, because I have the power cables, just not the SATA data ports. 

 

Now it would need this supplementary power to run an ODD because I wouldn't want to bottleneck the SSD or HDD anymore than I have to.

 

Now, I'm aware of the 5.25 drive enclosures, however I prefer keeping the ODD in the case if at all possible.

 

Has anyone heard of an adapter like I've mentioned? Or have another possible solution?

There are USB adapters for "external" use, that you can hide in your computer case. They usually connect directly to the SATA Data and Power port, if a 2,5" drive is used, the usb voltage usually is enough to run the drive.

 

to use it on a CD/DVD Rom, I think would kill your USB or the adapter. 

 

If you got PATA connectors on your motherboard, there are adapters for those to SATA as well...

Well, see that's the problem I've ran into is powering it while it's inside of the case. If they made a standalone board that only had the SATA data connector on it, and out to USB 3 header, then I could just plug in a SATA power right beside it, as one normally would when installing a SATA drive.

No, surprisingly it's a newer board in a pre-built running a Kaby Lake i5. It's pretty lousy. But one thought comes to mind, are there any adapters from m.2 to SATA? Really want to stick with SATA and not dump money into an m.2

Wow, that might work, I wonder if you have to use both USB's when you have PSU SATA power...

Then you can use M.2 ... they are not really that much more than SATA ssds. Around here a 250 gb ssd in m.2 is around 10 bucks more than the SATA version.

 

But then, some boards deactivate one SATA port if a M.2 is installed... don't know about your machine though.

You don't.

 

The power over USB is only used to power 2.5" devices. I have a similar adapter here... it came with a handy external PSU with a molex connector and an additional Molex to SATA power adapter. 

 

Right now I use that PSU to fire up an old 12 cm case fan as cooler in front of me when it gets hot around here.

Nice, I think that one would do the trick, and DVD/CD playback speeds aren't going to be affected much by USB 2.

You don't have to use conrad to get that, I think I grabbed mine on Amazon. :)

 

I just used them because they have a good variety of all kinds of adapters.
