Ok so the problem might be one of a few things, I'll try to keep this as short as possible so I might get someone to read it and help me. :)

I just bought the Kuhler 920 and at the same time I also got a new PSU, Corsair 860. After I've put the kuhler and PSU in and wired all cables neatly I was ready to start my system.

Worth pointing out is that the Kuhler's LED light was ON when it was connected and the system was on standby. I then hit the power button and I thought i heard some kind of small "pop sound" and then I smelled something. I don't know what the smell was but it didn't smell healthy, but I didn't see any smoke either. I figured it was from the PSU.

I then saw that the fans on my Kuhler didn't spin and the LED-light was off. (sidenote: I also bought a new SSD which was the only drive in the system at this time). So the panic set in, and I checked my CPU temp in the BIOS after a little while. It had reached 92 degrees.

The two fans was connected to a fan-cable-splitter in the Kuhler itself. Another 3pin cable was attached to CPUfan1 and there was also an USB cable connected to the motherboard.

After I've replaced my new SSD for my old one with Windows on it I came into windows and bought myself some time without ANY CPU cooling. I installed the software for my Kuhler, but it didn't launch because it couldn't find my Kuhler, it only said that I needed to connect it.

After some fiddeling I tried connecting the fans to the motherboard instead of the Kuhler itself. I then got the cooling going, albeit at max RPMs so it was like a small tornado in my chassi.

The only thing I can think of that I DID wrong would be that I connected the 3pin cable into the 4pin CPUfan1 slot wrong. There's "tracks" on the cable and a "track slider" on the 4pin on the motherboard, but I put it on the 3 pins to the right instead of the left where the "slide tracks" were. Did I short my Kuhler by doing THAT? I didn't know I could attach a cable where it wasn't suppose to fit on a motherboard.

Or did it short because of the new PSU that had to power alot of things at once for the first time launching it? (although it has probably been on alot in factory so..)

I don't even know which cable does what on my Kuhler. I guess the 3pin is for power to the pump and LED? and the USB is for the software side of things?

Anyways. I now have the Kuhler in my system controlled by 3rd party software to keep the fans on low RPMs. But what happened and can I fix it myself? Will I get a new one? I already ordered a new Kuhler since I doubt that I would get it replaced if I fucked it up myself. And I didn't want to wait for weeks while they investigated the issue.

I'm the worst at explaining things so I have little hope in this post, lol. It went too long and I'm babbeling! Sry

Hmm. Does the internal firewire look like an USB port? I have the asrock extreme 4 motherboard, if I don't have 3 USB ports on my mobo then I think you might be right.

If I did connect it to that, would that have made a shortage and fried the USB? :SS

I'm not totally sure, but there's a high chance that I put the USB cable into the slot under the € in C€ (know it's not a € but ye). But it does say USB_2_3 there..

Ya, pull off the Antec and test with the stock cooler - but does sound like your pump popped. If you just got it, should be able to return it for a replacement.... dead unit.

  • 2 weeks later...

Turned out it was the USB-function in the cooler itself that fried when I turned on my computer after hooking it up. Got a new Kuhler 920 and it works. If I were to blame for the shortage I don't know yet. Have emailed the retailers twice now since it happened and no replies. Going to call them when I have the time to replace the cooler and send the defect one back. I'm lazy though so I might just sell it without the software (and on-board fan-connectors) working. Hey it's still cooling and it's somewhat controllable through fan-software although the pump is always at max.
