you could go LGA 775 and mod it? probably cheaper than any X58 board, even if you need to buy two since you messed up the first time.

I'm not too familiar with the 775 socket ecosystem, since I was about 9 years old when it got released, but I think you can OC on some 775 boards, no?

look up LGA 775 to 771 mod. it's not that hard.

however, I'm not sure what BIOSes support it, and which support OC'ing, so you might need to look that up, or ask others on the forum.

I know for a fact that you can use 771 CPUs in 775 boards though.

Well, in the future, with ultra-antimatter-sublimation Xtreme cooling tech, we might be able to give those poor i9s a cool and comfortable life.

X58 boards are expensive because you can buy a X5650 for cheap and OC it like crazy.

X58 does not make any sense for people to buy and build nowadays-- the cheap xeons are only worth it for people like me who have kept their X58 since it was new. If you don't already have an X58 motherboard, it makes zero sense to spend $200 on a motherboard to run a $60 cpu (plus, DDR3 triple channel cost). There are much better options for similar money on the used and new market, which will have newer features built in (iGPU support, PCIE3.0, DDR4, Sata 3, M.2, USB3, etc etc).

It does make me chuckle to see I can part out my computer for more than I paid for it new, but I have no idea why people are willing to pay for such outdated hardware. Then again, my computer is still going strong in modern titles, so....I guess I'll put off upgrading for another year again.

The X5650 is FCLGA1366. LGA775 can be mofified to run LGA 771 chips, NOT 1366. Unless you already have a 1366 MOBO would not advise going down that rabbit hole.
