Old Dog Value €1600 Enthousiast PC, no peripherals.

Hello everyone!

 

It's been since Nehalem that I've been up to date with the latest in computer hardware. I can't image I ever thought I'd lose track of tech back then, but I did. I haven't built a PC since my Q6600, 8800gt. And guess what, it's still going strong. The GPU gave out after 6 years of service, so I replaced it with a 560Ti.

But It's been over 10 years, and the 5200rpm hard drives are making me realise how slow it is. 10 years is a nice number and it's time to retire the old lady and start anew.

Alot has changed though so I had some catching up to do. I did my best, but I'm here in the hopes that some of you might point out some flaws or help me along the final stretch.

 

Goals:

  • Max €1600 from azerty.nl for everything in the computer, no peripherals. If the upgrade is exponentially better then I can warrant the extra expenses. But at higher prices this is often not the case and expenses are often exponential instead of performance gains. 
  • Top of the line, but nothing overkill. 
  • I think I'm gonna use a 1080p display for gaming, but I might considering to higher resolutions later on. 
  • Compatibility !! 
  • Watercooled 
  • Expandability to the future.

Parts that I've chosen after some research:

This is where I can definitely use some help. Apparently there are now new and wild things like M.2, U.2, DDR4 and such roaming around in the world of computers. Crazy times indeed.

€1809. As you can see I've gone over my Budget a bit :p. 


Some questions:

  • Any thoughts? 
  • Is it worth saving up the extra €300 
  • Is compatibility good? Any better suggestions? 
  • Did I forget anything?
  • Is there some tech that I might consider waiting for? Like Coffee Lake or GTX2070?

Looks pretty solid to me. I would go with a HDD and SSD though

Just keeping this here as a Also if youre considering a 1070 maybe wait for Vega, see if its better value, unless youre against team red. I also feel like your system is a little unbalanced, (Top of the range i7 which i presume will be overclocked. But a midrange 1070 card? Why not a 1080 or something. Especially if youre considering anything higher than 1080p 60hz)

Why not use a Ryzen 1600? Yes, I am aware of the per core disadvantage compared to a 7700k

a 1070 would be suitable for 1080p 144Hz and is generally even overkill for 60hz Full HD. Also what processor would you suggest instead? The 7700k is pretty decent.

Probably just shift the balance to R5 1600 and 1080, if the budget can stretch to a decent monitor, or if you can get one sooner rather than later, id reccomend that.

@DisguisedDemise Thanks for the feedback. Yes the PC will be for gaming, but as I'm starting work this year (college finished :( ), I'll also want it to be quick to boot and responsive.

 

In the past I wasn't really an AMD fan, they're better on the budget but they were ill supported in games, their crossfire had it's problems and there were overall driver issues in the red team. This might be resolved now, but I don't think I'll take the chance for the minimal costs saved. So just for now I think I'll stay green. But I do appreciate the feedback! Maybe in the future I might do an AMD build once that working money starts flowing in :P.

 

Why a GTX1070? Well because the monitors I have are indeed 1080p 60Hz, so it should be plenty. But I can easily upgrade to a 1080 down the road if I ever would want to change my monitors.

 

@GER_T4IGA Because the speed differences on paper are amazing! :o I was shocked with this new standard haha. Agreed, after seeing your comment I did some research and saw that the boot time gains and load time gains are minimal, even though the speed difference is massive. But who knows, I might need this speed for work + maybe future OS software will be optimized for these new drives.

 

Main question though that I have: Is this RAM good? Do I need to go higher speeds (I plan to overclock it with the AIO cooler)? I'm not that familiar with what I gain with higher speeds, I couldn't find any decent explenations (so links are welcome).
