USB-C troubles

just got my first USB-C storage device, and of coarse it doesn't want to work.

case is corsair 1000D. when i plug in to the case, nothing happens. windows threw up an error once, but i don't even get that any more. there are 2 ports and cables on the case, but only 1 port on the board. i'm assuming i don't need both cables for 1 port to work, but wanted to mention this.

board is asus X670e hero. when i plug in to the board, nothing happens. no detection, no errors, can't see it in file explorer, or disk management. i tried looking for drivers, i don't see any. i saw thunderbolt driver, which i don't think is what i need, but tried anyways. i noticed a picture on the asus site, saying PCIE power cable is required. i find this super unusual for USB ports and im assuming this is for the mentioned charging capability.

figured i would post to see what you guys have to say.
