Last Night my 6850 suddenly died, so with a disappointing performance experience with battlefield 4 and this being the week leading up to black friday I thought I would set my sights quite high on a replacement. At the moment I'm looking at the 780, 290 and 280x, but my main concern is the prospect of the rest of my build not being up to scratch and causing a bottleneck. My specs are an i5 760 at stock 3.2ghz - I have no experience with overclocking but I do have a 212 and the OC genie feature available if needed, 8GB Ram, and a 650w power supply (which I'm pretty sure if enough from what I've read - I'm not planning on overclocking the gpu).

I've actually been toying with the idea of upgrading the entire pc since bf4 came out but decided to wait a while since by build is only 3 years old. I'm thinking that if I was to go for a 780, when it comes to having to upgrade the rest of my system I wouldn't have to even consider upgrading the gpu. But I'm also thinking that a 780 is perhaps overkill for what I really need at the moment, especially if It is going to be bottlenecked by my CPU obviously.

Any Advice?

That might bottleneck it indeed but I think that it is manageable.  However you could buy an R9 290 and just upgrade the CPU+board later when you have the funds. R9 290 is by far the best value out of all those cards and you will not need to upgrade anytime soon anyway.

If you overclock your CPU, you should be able to reduce the bottleneck, if not forgo it altogether.

If you oc it to 3.5- 4.0 ghz the i5 won't be bottelnecking a 290x.

My Pc: Cpu: I7 4790k @ 4,8 Ghz @1,25 volts, Motherboard: Maximus VII Formula, Graphicscard: 2x Titan X @1,4 at stock voltage (soon to be replaced), Ram: 32 gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 Cl 9, SSD: 2x 850 Pro 1 Tb in Raid 0, 2x Samsung 840 Evo 1 tb raid 1,, PSU: Corsair HXi Series 1000W 80+ Platinum, Case: H440. Soon to be watercooled again, maybe, probably, the Titans are too loud.

You're fine with a 280X and below. If you go crazy, like 780Ti crazy, then it will bottleneck.

You will definitely be bottlenecked but not majorly, maybe a difference of 10fps compared to and wear i5. if get a 780 there will be a massive increase the bf4 frames but not as much as there could be. If I were you I would still get a 780 or 290 etc but have plans to replace the cpu in near future, and in the meantime overclock a bit.

If you are gaming on 1080p then you will be fine. If you were on multi monitor or 1440p with a desire to go multi gpu you would need and upgrade.

Hmm ok thanks. I was hoping to avoid overclocking it but it sounds like I would have to with a 780. I'm using dual 1080p monitors at the moment but have no plans to move to anything beyond that at the moment. My most demanding tasks would be running skyrim/gtaV with mods + Video on the second screen, and battlefield 4. My main concern with the 290/280x are the noise and heat issues that I've heard about. I guess a lot will depend on what deals I can find throughout the week.

If I was to upgrade the CPU I'm assuming that the i5 4670k & i7 4770k would be the obvious choices? And Is 8GB of ram sufficient these days?
