Hi I'm using stock cooler and while playing battle field 3 in the first 2 minutes i was hitting 102-103c.

I checked the stock cooler and it is installed correctly.

so far bf3 is the only game I get this high temps.

I hit about 80-90 on WoW.

I idle at 35-50c

In the asus ufi bios i put the setting for my cpu to performance so i am running at 4.2ghz in the meantime should I set it back to balanced in the asus ufi bios. what are my options would getting a h100i really make a big difference from the stock cooler, and if so what is a decent case that does not break the bank that will fit one. also I am from canada and would be ordering from ncix.

Assuming that the temperature sensors are not malfunctioning, I'm surprised that your pc has not yet shut down to prevent a burn out

And honestly the stock cooler was never meant for any sort of overclocking at all, let alone all the way up to 4.2ghz

You should considering yourself lucky that you haven't put your cpu at full load and seriously damaged your cpu thus far being doing such crazy overclocks

Really any aftermarket cooler would be a great improvement to the stock cooler and amongst those, the h100i is one of the best valued liquid coolers and you should expect ~70C at load

Really any case with a dual 120mm mount at the top will fit. Personally I like the Bitfenix shinobi which has a window and looks very clean

Also look into some over clocking guides as you definitely do not know what you are doing and will damage your cpu if you continue overclocking at your pace

Agreed, overclocking on the tiny little stock cooler is not in any way recommended. You should look in to an aftermarket heatsink to keep your temperatures down and you should revert to stock clocks in the mean time.

Return to stock speeds and re test your temps. Do not game on temps that high. Buy an after market cooler; a hyper 212+ would be suffice, but if you want optimum performance, look into getting an All-in-one unit such as the H100i or H80i.

I conciser my self lucky I didn't damage my cpu I only let it run at that temp for maybe 45 to 110 seconds. I went back in to asus ufi bois and put it back to normal witch is 3.8 ghz and just did a bf3 64 map conquest play threw on ultra and didn't hit over 79c.

I call 85 degrees as my max temperature when stress testing, then I stop or nudge down a little ;)

You are getting 79ºC while playing BF3 with stock cooler and speeds?

Unless the ambiente temperature is like 35ºC over there I still think thats too hot, I'm also running my 3570k at stock speeds with the stock cooler and I'm getting around 62ºC under prime95/OCCT load.

The problem is he's overclocked on the stock cooler. That is asking for problems. Get a better heatsink like a NDH14 or Silver Arrow if you want to stay on air or get an H100i for water.

Exactly - a stock cooler is designed to keep the CPU at a safe and acceptable temperature at its turbo boost clock so from memory 3.8 Ghz for the 3570K. Once you start adjusting things you're generating more heat and therefore the cooler isn't able to keep up. If you feel you want better performance then look at getting an aftermarket unit.

One thing I do suggest is redoing your thermal paste. Do you know how to do it correctly? Here is a TechQuickie on it.

Get a better cooler if you plan on overclocking pat their turbo boost clock because the stock cooler is meant to cool up to the turbo boost clock. I would get a NH-D14 or a Corsair H100i like Crion said to keep your cpu cooled when overclocked. You should also reapply your thermal paste in order to possibly get better temps like windspeed36 said. I would also recommend the video that windspeed36 posted in reapplying your thermal paste.

Anything below 80 is fine, try not to go over it, I have the CNPS10X Optima from Zalman.

My room sits at around 35c on an average day, so with that cooler, it runs at 62c at 100% load.
