I recently got a second hand EVGA GTX 980 for the low. But I seem to get worse FPS. (Upgrade from a MSI R9 390 OC) So there are a two main games I play. CS GO and BF1.

So a little inside about the monitor set-up I have a ASUS 1440p 144hz freesync monitor. Also I am rocking a i7 4790K

Also the GTX 980 was overclocked to 1480 MHz core and  1762 MHz Memory

                   BF1             CSGO             Firestrike

R9 390      55 FPS      285-299 FPS        11,191(13,111 Graphics score)

GTX 980    64 FPS     170-240 FPS        12,388(14,874 Graphics score)

Sometimes the frame rate will drop to under 100 fps.

I have tried a full AMD driver nuke and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers. Does anyone know what might be going on? Or if any other Nvidia CS GO players want to chime in?

OP - Monitor GPU USAGE (Precision/GPUZ)

When your 100fps situation happens, is your GPU outright dropping it's USAGE (should be 97-100%) most of the time unless crippled by software or other hardware.

It's USAGE that matters. GPU Clocked high or not,

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Bear in mind, depending on the game you're playing, this is more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. I'd kind of attribute this to CS:GO.

nope, CSGO doesn't use 100% GPU all the time, there might be spikes

Yeah, CS:GO will run on a gerbil wheel, but it's still not exactly the paragon of hardware utilization.

Checking GPU usage it is hovering around 28-36% CPU usage is around 40-50%

As a suggestion, you may want to go to the NV Control Panel and make a profile for CS:GO and switch Power Management to "High Performance". It might not do anything, but you may be throttling for some reason as GPU boost can be a bit conservative.

I must emphasize that you should only really do this on a per game basis as otherwise you want the GPU to throttle when idling. Don't do it globally.

Yeah figured, which is why I'm attributing this more to CS:GO. Can you confirm that the rest of your games and benches are in order? You should more or less expect a very slight bump in performance.

Yes I tested BF1, BF4 and Battlefront and they all had a FPS bump.

In that case, I wouldn't really hold my breath for any improvements in CS:GO. For some reason or another, it's CS:GO related.
