My uncle has a iPhone 5 that he brought over to see if the battery was completely dead because when he bought a new lightning cable, it would not charge. How should I diagnose the battery? I've tried charging it overnight, charging it through my computer using lower voltage, using a power bank and it worked, turning the screen on with the dead battery sign. However, it turned off shortly after, not charging at all again. How sure can I be that it's the battery's fault? I plan to help him replace it using this battery: https://www.amazon.ca/1440mAh-5-45Whr-Polymer-Replacement-battery/dp/B00ZR1Y8DC and I am unsure if I should jump the gun on it. I am aware Amazon would refund me if it doesn't work, but I just want to be sure not to waste my uncle's time here.

Any help will be appreciated, and if there's a even better battery recommendation, please link it. Preferably a seller from Canada.

Thanks!

battery is probably dead if the phone has been used as a phone for a few years.

you need to get a special screwdriver to get into the phone, and then you need to carefully get the very easily tearable ribbon cables out, and then pull out the battery, place the new one back in, put back the ribbon cables and hope you didnt fuck something up

either get a new phone, or get someone to do it for you at $30 or so. i personally dont feel like an iphone 5 is new enough to buy a new battery for, especially with how slow it is on iOS 10

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I can't be sure. It has turned on, on occasions but still signalling its charging. I've tried tinkering with the cable, Moving it in many ways to see if it will charge, but nothing

Yeah, it has been used for a few years, think he got it when it was released. I have prepared my amazon cart with the tool and battery itself but I don't know if I should bite the bullet and buy it all.

He doesn't want a new phone and he seems to be quite happy with it, I won't try to encourage him. either way, he still wants the data on it regardless.

If you're not sure if it's the issue, it's no problem buying it to try, but it's completely unethical to return it if it doesn't have the desired effect. For all you know the battery is perfectly fine, and you're costing that company money for no reason other than your own misfortune.

It's only $15. Buy it, if it doesn't work too bad.

Does the phone stay on when it's plugged in? Most phones I've had with toasted batteries will still run fine when plugged in.

That's fine if I don't return it, I wouldn't mind replacing my old iphone 5 to let my mom use it (iphone 4)

Since the phone was originally dead when my uncle brought it over, plugging it in shows me the battery and the lightning cable plugged in icon. But then it fizzles off and dies completely again, telling me it was accepting charge, but stopped after a few seconds.
