3000 Mhz Ram with Motherboard help/advice

Go to solution Solved by You_are_a_cunt,

The ram will default to 2133MHz, which is the standard speed for DDR4. Anything else above that is considered an overclock, even if it's done by activating an XMP profile.

Your 3000MHz ram is guaranteed by the manufactured to work at speeds up to 3000MHz.

I have a b350 motherboard that will support 3000Mhz Ram after an update, but how am I supposed to apply the update if I can't use the ram in the first place?

also, on a slightly different and unrelated topic (sorry about that), how do I go about keeping my windows product key if I want to reinstall widows along with the upgrade because 3 main pieces of hardware will have changed (Motherboard, CPU and RAM) and my hard drive will have been wiped if I install new Windows? sorry about the length of this but I could do with an answer as early as possible. Thank you all in advance

Windows Question:

if you have a retail key and have linked your account to your Microsoft account, there's no problem. the PC will initially be unactivated, but there's an option in settings that says "I recently changed hardware" and it transfers the key from your old motherboard to your new one automagically.

if you have an OEM key, it might work in the way I said above, or you might need to call MSFT telling them you switched, then they will switchover the license for you.

Sorry, completely spaced out at that part.

You need to be using a Microsoft account for this, assuming you're using Windows 10, that is.

Once your PC is upgraded, just boot into windows on your original boot drive. Windows will try to activate and probably spit an error. If it does, go to the activation screen in the Control Panel, click on Troubleshoot and it'll give you a link saying "I've recently upgraded my hardware". Click that and it'll let you chose which PC associated with your account to transfer the license from.

Theoretically you're good to go at this point, but I recommend at least refreshing Windows (from the options menu)

(I'm exhausted and I can't go to sleep for another couple hours. Might actually start watching the WAN Show and pass out by the time it starts, since it WILL be late)
