Variable ND-filters

Im looking for a variable ND-filter for my Canon 18-135mm with a 67mm wide lens. Do some of you guys have experience with ND filters and are there some you want to recomend?

For photo or video?

For photo, I don't recommend using any variable ND as they are 2 polarizers stacked.

For video, if you plan to use one you should go for a high quality one with minimal color casting.

Mainly video, but also long exposure photos of rivers and stuff.

For long exposure, get a proper deep ND filter.  Don't use variable NDs.

Why can't I use variables for long exposure? Isn't it good that I can adapt to the setting with a good thing?

As I said, two stacked polarizers.  It may affect the look of the image.

I know many creators use variable nd filters from tiffen for video etc. although, for your lens, I don't think you would need more than a 4 stop. 

 

For landscapes/long exposures etc. I'm in the filter holder camp for various reasons, mainly that you can swap them over various lenses and they don't end up being useless if you upgrade your lenses or if the manufacturer comes up with a wider thread (case in point, canon is moving every high end lens they have to 82mm from 77mm.)

Also, don't cheap out on this stuff if you see yourself using it for a long period, in my experience you end up getting sick and tired of it and buying what you should have bought in the first place 2 months later anyway.
