Hello Forums!

I've always been the media/artistic guy when it comes to basically anything in my family, and right now I'm having an upgrade itch.

My D5100 still works just fine, so I'm planning on selling it when I get a new one!

So I'm looking into the second hand market alot, I dont mind having a used camera and the D7000 has caught my attention. My photography knowledge may fail me a bit here; but as far as I know the D7000 is the 'big brother' of the D90 right?

Specwise it seems like a great camera, and I'm looking to step up from the smaller ones like the 3000 and 5000 series.

Some D7000's are getting sold for about $400, is that a good price?

Any other recommendations? :)

Thanks!

I am not familiar enough with nikon's history of camera releases, however all I can say is this, don't fall into the trap of buying an older body that is in an upgraded line of cameras, just because of that factor, it might be the case, and it often is, that an older pro line camera is actually worse than new offerings at the same price.

An example is my 50d, which is nowhere near as powerful as today's entry level cameras that have more features, better processors, higher res. sensors etc.

Looking over the spec sheet of the d7000, I have to say, that is indeed the case. You'd be far better off with something from this decade, like the d5600.

I would get the 7100 if you are looking at the 7xxx series. The 7200 is better and is just slightly more expensive aswell so if you find a good deal on that one I would go for that instead of a 7100

This is really good info, thank you!

Is there a huge difference between the three?

Between the 7000 vs the other two, yes. Between the 7100 vs 7200 not as much. But still a good deal on a 7200 is still worth to for imo.

Alright so a good 7100 or 7200 is a definite yes over a 7000

Yes, without doubt. Try to find one with a decent lens too if looking used. A lot of people sell them with something like a 16-50 ish 2.8 sigma

I'm not sure if the build etc. of the d7200 is worth the sacrifice of the articulating touchscreen of the d5600 (I believe the d7200 doesn't have one).

Whatsmore, looking at the specs of the d5600 its entirely worth it right now, it offers most of the d7200 does, if not all, at a lower price, a more compact size and has these features like a touchscreen which are very nice to have and pretty standard in 2017...

That was supposed to be the "informational" but yeah..

Good info, I'll keep that in mind.

The main difference between a camera that is a Nikon D5### and below vs. a D7### and above: in-body AF motor and sensor size (since all FF cameras are above a D5###).

Is in-body AF motor essential: not really

Is it useful to have: only if you have older lenses, primarily lenses that are older than Nikon-G series.  And since older lenses can often be cheaper than newer lenses (though this depends on the type of lens).

The in body AF motor might be useful, if OP has older glass they might want to buy.

The d7xxx series is DX right? so that doesn't really hold when comparing the d7200 to the d5600.

OP, you may want to consider getting a 17-50mm f/2.8 from sigma or tamron to replace the kit lens with...

So you're saying the D5600 is the clear winner?

Yeah I really need a new lens :P

Meant only for the FX bodies when I said sensor size difference.

Both lenses should have in-lens AF motor.

I'll second the 5600 Vote, I had a D5100 and loved it(it's still kicking too). If your not getting into photography seriously then the D5600 is a great camera(especially for video). I almost bought one but I got an opportunity to skip ahead to a D750 and jumped on it.

I want something bigger though, never been a huge fan of the compact variations..

After lots of research I find myself looking at the 7100. D7000 wont be much of a upgrade from the D5100, really.

I totally get it. While I didn't mind the size of my 5100 while I had it. After using my 750 for a while, which is a much larger full frame body, picking up my 5100 feels like I'm holding a toy. In the end it's up to you to choose what camera you like the best. Both cameras are great and the specs are very similar. I believe someone in this thread has already said this, but having a newer camera comes with a bunch of small benefits like Wifi, Bluetooth, touchscreens, and other small features that are really nice but don't affect the core operation of the camera (WiFi transfer to your phone/tablet will change your life).
