Multi Router Setup

Hey everyone,

I want to have two router connected to my modem. One for a home network where nothing is open or port forwarded and one for a server network where their would be open ports. My modem has 4 Ethernet ports and one fiber where the internet comes in, is it as simple as plugging it into another one of the Ethernet ports or is there some config i have to do?

Thanks

Yes but they won't be on two separated network unless your modem have VLAN support or you could just enable DHCP on modern you want port forwarding.

While the second router disable DHCP or some router have "acts as access point feature" which essentially does the same thing.

This is just rough guide, but this is simple way to separated two networks.

I don't think you can manage my modem.

The network looks like this

Are you able to manage and control the modem? (Im pretty sure you can)

Does your router 1 or 2 have function to create VLANs? What are model of them?

what are you trying to do, block access between the server and your computer?

You can achieve this with the firewall.

it is two rules. block all traffic between two IPs. Firewall only slows down if you try to block every IP in china. I know iv tried it.

BTW im also not trying to block assess from computers inside the network its just my dad has sensitve data on a nas and for businesses reasons he can't port forward it. So I just need it so that the home network has no ports open

You would have to have a isp that allows you to be assigned more than 1 ip address (mine won't), even then you'd need a switch between the modem and the 2 routers.

Just build a pfsense box to with 2 nic's on 2 different lans.

If your router supports OpenWRT/LEDE you could use it split off a second VLAN for servers. What router model do you have?

If not, you could either get a Ubiquiti edgerouter-x or a Mikrotik HEX, they both support VLANs and a whole bunch of other features for $60, and you'd then turn your current router into an accesspoint.
