I wouldn't even go 1700X, the 1700 seems fine for anything really.

I don't think the 1800x is worth it, IMO.  The 1700x is better value and you won't lose much performance especially if you OC.

Don't get either. Get the 1700 and overclock it to the same frequency as the 1800x.

The difference between the R7 1700, 1700X and 1800X is very small. The 1700's typically OC to 3.8-3.9. The 1700X typically 3.8-4.0, and the 1800X typically 3.9-4.0. The lucky few may be able to be pushed a little higher, particularly with baseclock adjustment.

The tiny average clock speed advantage of an 1800X or 1700X does not justify the very large price increase over the 1700 when overclocking.

However, if overclocking is not going to be done for one reason or another (business system etc) then the 1700X and 1800X can be more appropriate if the higher stock speed is required.

As long as your into overclocking, not saying its difficult but some are not interested in doing it so there is a market for the x models I personally did not really want to overclock as it seemed intimidating so I went for the 1800x I now know otherwise

I can say that if your just a little motivated follow the advice of the others and get the 1700 its very easy to overclock with a short learning curve some mobo's even have preset overclock profiles you can use. Bottom line is 8 cores and 16 threads make for very nice rig.

There is also zero learning curve if you buy a Asus motherboard, Both my 1600's are at 3.8Ghz and I've done nothing, Asus AISuit have a Tune up wizard that you only need to click RUN and leave it for 5 minutes and boom. overclocked. 

 

@Op Grab the 1700 and a asus motherboard, although I'm sure the MSI ones will do it as well.

I learned the hard way with that software, I will never overclock anything outside of the bios that AIsuite is crap I have the ASUS Hero VI so I'm pretty familiar with that. My 1600x is running at 3.9Ghz on my MSI board with no problem, will be able to squeeze more performance with a little work with the new AGESA update posted the other day.

I wouldn't call it crap, on both my B350 Prime and X370 Prime it worked amazingly, clicked it after installed, it tested each CPU frequency for stability, crashed and set it at 3.8ghz and been happy since.
