Asus Strix 1080 11gbps for 1440p144 gaming

xsimplyjosh

is an asus strix 1080 8gb 11gbps capable of running most 1440p games @ 144hz [or >100Hz will suffice]

or would i definitely need the Ti variant. I'm perfectly fine with dropping one notch lower [Ultra>high] if needed.

as im planning to get a 1440p gaming monitor...

alsoo im still not convinced by 4k overall

any tips would be greatly appreciated thanks [from experienced users and everyone else]

A 1080 will be plenty enough for 1440p gaming, at those higher refresh rates it is often the CPU that is the bottleneck. What CPU are you running? I would suggest either the 7700K for ultimate performance or the Ryzen 1600 for a bit better value.

dont worry- it will do fine. I run witcher 3 at ultra at 60 fps (vsync) with a Palit GTX 1070 Super Jetstream on an ultrawide 1440p pannel.

I'm using a 6700K on z170 and it's totally fine, even upper i5s won't bottleneck in 99% of the games. 7700K is a tad overkill :-)

It should be fine most of the time.

I have a 1070 and im most AAA titles I get about 70-90fps. So with the 1080 I think you will be in the 80-100 range.

It will ultimately depend on the games you plan to play. For BF1, sure. For Ghost Recon Wildlands or Watch Dogs 2, probably not.

You should go check out a couple of reviews that have included performance on various games. That should give you a general ideas of what you are going to get.

Base on my memory (not that good) from the review I have read, GTX1080@1440p should get around 80s FPS on ultra settings for most games.

Just get the normal GTX 1080 if they are cheaper, there is no performance gain.

yes thanks everyone for the insights, i have settled for the 1080 , it was approx 549usd [775aud total price incl shipping] off amazon, sure i have to wait a fair bit for the delivery but the savings alone make up for the time [see below reason]... in australia the exact carda is almost 200au more than the price listed above...

being in aus its hard to get cheap graphics card off retail due to the absurd markup of prices [we are talking 150-200aud extra or equiv for the same thing] and the 1080 ti i was eyeing on is actually 54% more exp for a relative 30-35% gain in results...

so yea im perfectly fine with making a few little compromises [like down tuning ultra to very high] for smoother gameplay... at least can still rock the game :)
