So, I'm trying to do my first build and I have some concerns that I hope some of you can help with. I'm planning to use unRAID with Plex and maybe OwnCloud, and also planning to run Ubuntu as base OS and have a VM for Windows inside Ubuntu for gaming and some other software.

These are my base components but I'm still searching for the adequate graphic cards.

Component   Selection
CPU               y
CPU Cooler               uy
Motherboard               Buy
Memory               Buy
                Buy
Storage               uy
Video Card               y
Power Supply               Buy

I'm mostly concerned about the MoBo, not sure if it will play nice with unRAID and VMs. (Still reading ChalkChalkson's unRAID guide )

Also, for graphics cards I think I'm supposed to have a dedicated card for unRAID and dedicated card for my OS. I was thinking of buying a 1050 for unRAID and maybe 1060 or 1050Ti for the OS. I know 1050 for unRAID might be overkill but I'm planning to use plex in different devices and besides, older cards are close to the same price of a 1050.

And as Linus and Luke said in last weeks WAN show, it sucks to buy PC parts these days...

Have you ever used unraid before? ran vm's on it?

I found it to be slow, laggy vm's, and a resource hog. Maybe I just didn't spend enough time tweaking it but I just went back to running everything straight on a linux server.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep it in mind and get the trial for unRAID, If it doesn't work then I'll try running everything straight from Linux.

I currently run my Plex Server from an underpowered i3 Windows 10 laptop, so, for me, almost anything will be an upgrade :D
