Windows installer does not detect any HDDs

BrainFried

I bought a new HDD because my old one comitted sudoku, I tried to install windows on it but the bios would not detect anything apart from the windows cd. I took off all the cables and then put them back on, the drive was showing in the bios so I booted from the CD to enter the installation. When asked to select a drive, the windows installer did not see anything. Could the problem be faulty cables disconnecting randomly or is it something more serious related to the mb?

Yes we need some details. what windows version, what hardware, what drives? you may need to load the AHCI or SATA drive from a usb stick. you can usually download it form the motherboard manufacturers website. I ran into this when installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on my home server but eventually gave up and ran 2012. For some reason 2008 R2 install just wouldn't see my disks.

I WANT TO LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT!

If I'm wrong, please make me look like an idiot so everyone can learn from my wrongness.

You may need SATA controller drivers already loaded on a USB. A laptop I had wouldn't detect any drives under Windows 7 because the installer didn't have drivers for the SATA controller. A lot of laptops that shipped with Windows 8 had this problem with Windows 7, same thing with Windows 10 laptops and AiOs.
