i have recently bought a TP link  TL-PA4020PKIT V1.20 in a hope of getting performance better than my wifi. the adapter is advertised as having up to 600Mbps speeds but it only has 100Mbps Ethernet ports so i get equal speeds to what i was getting on WiFi. so my question is is there anyway around this or is it a hard limit because of the ports? and should i return the product as it doesn't do what it advertises?

the amazon page i bought it from doesnt say anything about it having  100Mbps ports on it, it only says that it doesn't have gigabit ports.

are you sure it only has 100 and not your machine? Even getting the same speeds you'll get more stable connection, unless speed is what you were after then yes return it.

what a #EpicFail from TP-Link, claiming 500Mbps yet only having 10/100 jacks, someone should SUE them for false advertising.

from the TP Link site

Quote

The terms “AV500” and “500Mbps” are derived from applicable specifications and refer to the theoretical maximum physical-layer data transfer rate. Those terms are used on this product solely to indicate its compatibility with other “AV500” or “500Mbps” PowerLine devices.  Actual data speeds vary and are limited by the product’s Ethernet port and other network conditions such as data traffic, electrical noise, and wiring issues. If you are uncertain about your network conditions, you should consult an IT professional to assist in selecting a networking product.

it is the ports, I checked on the Newegg listing and it states 10/100 ports

the 500 per the TP link site I quoted is like a "passthrough" to other devices in the product line that have faster ports.

Amazon returns are stupid easy (at least as a Prime member), i've done a few, you just start a return from your order history, state your reason why and they email you a return label that you put on the box and drop it off at a UPS drop-off.

for me I could arrange a pick up or to drop it off at my local amazon drop. I guess it depends where you live.

I think I could do pickup too, but drop off is easier for me, I don't like the idea of leaving things on the porch, it's been a few months since I did a return

I have had powerline advertised at 540M get me 30 ...advertised speeds are without overhead and powerline speeds will highly depend on your houese's powerlines.

I switched from W-LAN to powerline, then back to wireless and now to an ithernet cable routed trough 2 windows. my recommendation is to try and get an ethernet cable from your router to your PC if there is any feasible way.

Think of it like this ....

You have three computers in the house  A, B and C  ... and each one is connected to the network using a powerline adapter.

A transfers files to B at speed of 100 mbps

B transfers files to C at speed of 100 mbps

C transfers files to A at speed of 100 mbps

Inside your house, through the voltage wires, there's 300 mbps worth of data being moved around.

However, each computer actually can receive and/or transmit a maximum of 100 mbps.

The 500 mbps or whatever refers to the maximum "capacity" of the medium, how many bits can be theoretically moved around through the voltage wires in your house between powerline adapters.

The actual speed of data coming in or out a single power adapter will be limited by the ethernet port on the adapter (100 mbps in your case)

You may get faster speeds than 100 mbps through your wi-fi but in theory, through powerline you'd get lower latency ... would be better for skype calls, remote desktop connections  (mouse and refresh speeds will be faster), multiplayer games may be more responsive, more lag free etc

that might be why I don't use it, honestly it's been a while and I remember there was some reason I didn't do the option, i just don't remember why and so I just did the drop off because the local UPS was on my route between home and work.
