Hey guys, im looking at upgrading my mobo/cpu to something a little newer (My hardware is dated, still rocking a 1st gen i5 :|)

Im looking at the i5 7600k and i5 7640x - These CPUs seem to have no noticable difference other than a different base clock speed.

Do you guys have any recommendations/suggestions or pros/cons of each that i should take into consideration?

Appreciate it,

Russy

edit: Forgot to mention, it would be used mainly for gaming and occasionally Photoshop work

DUDE go AMD Ryzen 5.

In this price range you WILL get something better from the Red Team!

More Cores will be a huge benefit down the road

I agree with @Metallus97, get Ryzen 5. If you have to get an Intel CPU, get the 7600k.

Neither. Go for Ryzen 5.

Not to mention that 7640X requires expensive X299 mobo

You should get the i5 7640x you will be one of the 5 people who own one.

7640x is the BIGGEST BS The Blue team ever shitted out.

you will literally save 200 or more$$ going Ryzen.

And have LOADS more Performance in multi threaded workloads.

I know there is still much hate on AMD. But i can tell you they WORK and kick ass :D

@Russy

Need to add the neither option to the poll.

7600k meh its out classed by the cheaper R5 1600 pretty much across the board and will have a longer useful life due to have 2 more cores and triple the threads, whilst being on the AM4 socket which is guaranteed for 4 years vs LGA1151 which will be phased out next gen.

An X299 i5? *vomits* A motherboard should never cost more than your CPU. Kabylake-X should not exist. Period.

EDIT: *raises a glass* Cheers to the 1st of many confused by WTF Kabylake-X is.

Got nothing against red team. Might be time to ask for some supplier demo's to do my own benchmarking etc.

1600/1600x looks to be the go.

Everyone else is right, an R5 1600 will save you a lot of money. Don't bother with a 1600X, it's just a rebranded/factory overclocked 1600.

Yeah and you are paying more for less except in 1700X

Even in 1700X's case. A 1700 with a small overclock will beat it in value any day.

What about the guaranteed 4GHz in 1700X?

What guaranteed 4GHz? The max rated speed is 3.9GHz, while the 1700's is 3.8GHz. Of course, you can overclock higher, but the rated speeds are close to equal. 1700X is just factory overclocked a tiny bit.
