Been messing around recently and decided to try and upgrade an old Dell computer to Windows 10 from Windows XP. The issue is, it only has 1GB of RAM :D and I only have a 64-bit copy of Windows 10. I could download a 32-bit version from Microsoft, but I don't have a USB thumb drive large enough to fit it on.

However, I do have a 1TB external hard drive. I am wondering if I would be able to put a 32-bit version of Windows 10 onto that HDD and then install it onto the Dell's internal HDD. Possible?

Why not just install the 64bit version on the Dell? Does the CPU support x86_64? Regardless if you run 32 or 64 bit it's still going to be a painful experience so why put in a lot of effort for a bad experience?

According to the Windows 10 requirements, I need at least 2GB of RAM to run a 64-bit version of Windows 10, hence the 32-bit version. Pretty sure the CPU supports x64.

My reasoning for doing this? Just messin' around.

You need 2gb of RAM to run Win10.

It doesn't enforce this. You can run 64 bit on 512 mb if you want. Just use 64 bit. But really is just keep xp. Could will be much faster.

Again, you need 2gb of ram to run Win 10, don't insist on using a 12 years old computer with the latest OS out there, I had a laptop with 2gb of 1666mhz ram only and I could use it for browsing and light work alright, memory would be often close to be maxed out though all the time.

RAM issue aside, am I able to install Windows 10 from an external HDD to an internal HDD?

Should work fine. It'd just a USB block device and can't tell between flash and hdd. You can also install Windows from the network if you have windows server.
