So I have an older Pentium 4 HT PC I got from someone, and I got to wondering if it's possible to use it as a 771 Xeon build instead? It's a prebuilt computer so I don't know the motherboard type or anything off the top of my head, but with a Pentium 4 HT and a Windows Vista original OS, I wondered if it's possible to use a quad core Xeon, or how I would go about finding one that would work? I'm not too worried about the actual mod (I can use the P4 to protect the pins while I use an art knife to cut the guides, and get the sticker needed) but I just don't know how the compatibility works out with this stuff. Never really modded anything like this before and I figured this was a good, CHEAP way to do so. Thanks in advance :D

Mostly, it will work, but make sure your mobo actually supports it. For example, I got  dell prebuilt here that should support it, but the mobo/bios just doesn't work, and therefore won't work.

Again, most boards do though.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Well, is there a specific type of Xeons that do and don't work on the 775 socket when modded from 771? I've heard 3xxx and 5xxx series are compatible usually, but I don't know if I can even update the bios of the old Pentium 4 computer as I generally don't work with prebuilt machines. The only one I've worked with was an HP DC5000 from high school and even then it was more just something for CCR class.

It's probably series specific. Look up the datasheet for your PC and go from there.

Since the computer has a P4HT, I am going to assume that it will not work.

Look at the specs of the motherboard, what chipset does it have, what FSB does it have.

As far as I can tell this is the right computer. I don't know what chipsets are good, though it has an Intel 945GC chipset, with 800MHz FSB.

You'll want to check with these guys fro compatible motherboards. I would look for an enthusiast grade board from gigabyte, EVGA, Asus etc for the most likely support though.
