Hi i would like some insights on what PSU should I buy. I was very eager to buy the processor when i saw some of the stocks are nearly gone for the LGA1150, an upgrade for my G3258 paired with my GTX 960 FTW 2gb (please go easy on my it was my first build :() . i5 4690k was my first choice saw on amazon and it was expensive, so i look up to B&H  and  it was cheaper for the i7 4790k shipping included, and I didn't see an i5 4690k on B&H so I went with i7. I cant not settle with a locked CPU because of my MOBO.

So I slapped in the new processor default no overclocking ( me scared :S ). Run Aida64 stress test, and to my surprise, the mouse is sticking like the movement is like stuttering, like pause then jumping to the next point so I got a suspicion that it must be the PSU, I stopped the stress test and run some games and its working fine thermals are in 30-60 if I remember it correctly.

My specs are the following as I see it now, every part doesn't make sense (didn't see that when i was picking parts last year):

  • EVGA 500w 80+ (don't know if its white one or something)
  • i7 4790k (upgraded from g3258)
  • GTX 960 FTW 2GB
  • 8GB RAM hyper fury x
  • ASUS Z97-A
  • H60 corsair
  • master box 5 with the fan in the front is used
  • LED strips just around the side panel window

  • standard mouse and keyboard (got corsair K70 LUX blue switch, but it was disturbing my wife when she sleeps)
  • standard headset
  • webcam
  • WLAN dongle

My question is:

  1. can I overclock my CPU with my PSU?
  2. Do I have to buy a UPS?

edit:

3. what PSU should i get?

3. what PSU should I get if I will overclock?

4. do you recommend that I still use my PC for gaming with my current PSU no overclocking?

I've search online but I cannot find my answer there.

I bought the parts only last year, October 2016. I know i should have bought LGA1151, and I admit it was my mistake because I got blinded by the G3258 and followed the required parts to build that system with that CPU. Please go easy on me, I'm noob and sorry my bad english.

One, you should not overclock your system with that PSU. It's a pretty low-quality unit.

Second, no, your system should stutter like that while running a CPU stress test. That's not unusual.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Stress tests are often capable of stressing the CPU enough that mouse movement becomes stuttery, if it's only happening in stress tests you should be fine.

That said, that's a pretty low quality psu so I'd recommend you getting it upgraded. Preferably you should probably look at something tier 2 or above on the psu tier list. A GQ or Seasonic g series would be good options, if you want a really nice unit the EVGA G2/G3 are both tier 1 and come with 10 year warranties, corsair also has the RMi and RMx PSUs.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
