OP so what do you do when you make videos? 

 

iMove is a linear editor with some basic features like picture in picture.

 

Do you need multichannel video and audio? If the answer is no, just use iMovie!

I use both iMovie, basic edits, & Final Cut Pro X, advance edits. Sometimes I will use both on a project.

It's absolutely pathetic that any video editor wouldn't be able to import a common format ... kind of defeats the purpose.  But, I have seen it myself, be it video or audio, I know of a few programs that can't open things they definitely should be able to.

Reading that thread, it appears mp4 is sort of a container like mkv that can contain many different codecs, so while one mp4 might work perfectly another may not since they actually are fundamentally different internally and just share a name.  Ie, you can both be correct.
